Magazine Fakes Photo of Breast-Feeding Vargas

Marie Claire published a photo many feel lacks journalistic tact. The magazine’s December issue ran an interview with ABC news anchor Elizabeth Vargas, in which the 20/20 host discussed the difficulties involved with being a new mom with a busy career. To illustrate how hard life as a working mother can be, Marie Claire photoshopped a photo to look like Vargas seated at the anchor desk, breastfeeding a baby. Vargas disliked the pic, but maintained her sense of humor.

"Elizabeth was more than happy to sit for the interview but was disturbed that the magazine would set aside basic journalistic standards to photoshop her head onto a fake image. Vargas did joke that her real baby is cuter, that she is proud to breastfeed her newborn but wouldn't do it at the anchor desk and that she wouldn't be caught dead in that ugly gold blouse!"

A Marie Claire rep didn’t see the problem with the photo; the rep thought it was obviously a fake, so everyone should be cool with it.

"There isn’t a working mother who can’t relate to this image and immediately identify with the very real dilemma Elizabeth Vargas wrestled with. We do not believe anyone seriously thought she would nurse and report the news the same time! This is an image illustration and is stated so with the byline of this story. We only want to make the point that women choosing between their career and being a parent is a tough decision that we are very sensitive to. We at Maire Claire think that Vargas is a great journalist and we look forward to watching her on 20/20. We are also grateful for her interview, which we hope reaches the many women who can relate to this serious topic."

Perhaps the problem is many readers thought the photo was real, and it reflected poorly on Ms. Vargas. And just what the fuck is an “image illustration?”

Oh I see you can show someone what it would look like IF she was breast feeding because nobody knows what that looks like. whatever

How would it reflect poorly on her if it were real?
Breastfeeding your child at work is bad?

It didn't work out too well for Deborah Norville. She lost some cred for allowing photos of herself breastfeeding to be featured on the cover of People magazine. NBC was rumored to have said it was in poor taste. She got canned shortly after.

I love how whenever people photoshop heads something they can never seem to get right is the dimensions. I would have complained it made me look like I had a Giraffe neck. tongue

And the picture itself isn't very flattering or nurturing to begin with. I doubt even a news anchor would really keep that sort of stoic heartless composure and plastic smile while breast feeding. whatever

Exactly, but I do think its retarded that they photoshopped her in especially if they didn't ask her.

Morons here in the united states get offended by the sight of breastfeeding. Parenthood magazine recently received a huge amount of flack for thier readers because they showeda baby breast feeding on the cover. they receved tons of letters from outraged women who said they were embaraseed to have the magazine in thier home or around thier husbands. The magazine basically said too bad and said they won't avoid showing breast feeding in the future even if it means loosing readers. (the magazine is called PARENTHOOD.)

anyway..this country still has some real puritnical people in it, who think that breast feeding should be heard of but never seen. and I think attitude needs to stop. they need to get over it because it's natural and healthy and it's what our fucking breasts are intended for.

My sister was involved in a case where she was asked to not breast feed in a gym where she worked out. It actually made the evening news but it happened three years ago so I can't find any links.

Here's one .

Her original letter to the gym:

Palisadium Health Club and Spa

Cliffside Park, NJ 07010

Attn: Owner/Management Palisadium Health Club

Re: New Breast Feeding Policy?

Recently, while breast-feeding my daughter Lucy on the very comfortable sofas in the lobby, I was told by manager, Jane Goldberg, that my breast feeding was not appropriate and that I should go elsewhere.

Clearly she is not aware of New Jersey state laws (enclosed) protecting a mother's right to breastfeed anywhere the mother is allowed to be. Her actions were rude, improper, unnecessary and illegal.

Breast feeding is not a sexual or lewd act and should never be treated as such. No mother should be made to feel incriminated or socially ostracized for breastfeeding her baby. I would think an establishment focused on health would be commending me for making the healthiest choice for me and my baby instead of telling me it is something to hide.

I am very upset by this and believe the management owes me an apology. However, if the Palisadium is going to stick by this "new" policy I will be forced to send the enclosed letter to the local board of health so that they can issue a fine for breaking the law.

Sincerely,

Joy ***********

I personally dig how she gives the gym "props" for their sofas. The outcome of the lawsuit (it didn't go to court) was that the gym wouldn't discriminate against mothers in the future. I'm not sure if that's a big "win" since all they were doing is agreeing to follow state law.

Exactly. I mean, I don't believe that breast-feeding is that big of a deal, but seeing as a lot of people do, I don't understand why the magazine would risk damaging someones career like that? Even IF they stated that it wasnt an actual picture. They totally should have asked before publishing.

your sister is awesome Gringo. I would have done the same thing.

I don't know why or how people began to view breast feeding as Inappropriate. it's not sexual or lewd and I feel that if anyone thinks it is it's because of their own perversions. Breast feeding shouldn't offend anyone. I'm not sure if I can wrap my head around why it does for some. Thank Godness for New Jersey state law.

I can see why she would be bothered by a fake image

But I get so disgusted when I think about how a majority of people view breatfeeding. I'm happy to live in a big city because I've nursed my son on the subway, on the bus, walking through Ikea, in a pouch in the mall, food courts everywhere, and on a bench downtown. I don't really care if I offended anyone either. Breasts are there to feed a baby! They are the healthiest option, it's NATURAL! People have just learned to over sexualize the breast to point of insanity.
