"And when I watch you move
And I can't think straight
And I am silenced
And I can't think straight
It's the best thing
Such a beautiful feeling"
-Beautiful Feeling by PJ Harvey
I've been pondering beauty.
I googled and found that many definitions of the word suggest the coming together of different qualities. One quote attributed to Coleridge off hyperdictionary: The old definition of beauty, in the Roman school, was, ``multitude in unity;'' and there is no doubt that such is the principle of beauty.
I've noted that great beauty and tremendous sadness often inhabit the same body or object. I'm not sure why. Has anyone else noticed this? Maybe I'm just attracted to sad things.
I've been thinking about the permanency of beauty; how some things have an enduring classic quality and remain important through long stretches of time. These beauties create calm in the observer. It's as if they are static. Think of a favourite piece of art, or a building, or a great piece of literature. Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure feels that way for me. When you read that book, you experience the characters as timeless.
Then there is fleeting beauty. A certain person's way of moving. A phrase used that might never be spoken again and may not have been heard by anyone. An unexpectedly delightful mixture of smells when the wind changes one morning while you're walking to school. This beauty is chaotic. I tend to appreciate this sort more. I get bored by serenity.
And then, I've come across enduring chaotic beauty. *smiles*
I have encountered a beautiful object or person and I cannot stop staring. Sounds seems distant, everything slows down. It is like I've walked to the edge of the precipice. With the rapid melding of contradiction, it feels as if I am moving to the moment/location of unity: utter reconciliation, destruction, and creation.
Maybe this is why beautiful woman are so fucking scary.
My friends, when has beauty touched you?
And I can't think straight
And I am silenced
And I can't think straight
It's the best thing
Such a beautiful feeling"

>When I dance, I feel moments of beauty, which are destroyed one moment later by the fact that I dance in a stacatto, awkward, asymmetrical way. I am addicted to this feeling.
you speak a lot about dancing. you know, some say "motorcycling is the meditation of the modern man". at some point, you reach a plateforme where things seem to focus for you, there's a threshold there which can bring a pleasant feel of being totally involved. Do you feel the same thing about dancing ?
