Storytime! A short story by Skruffy:

"Vitamin C" PART ONE

Four minutes ago, a rock fell straight out of the sky and smacked right into the lawn not six feet in front of Jessie and I. It bounced once and then it settled into the blades of grass like it had always been there, as though it had a right to be there. It wasnt a big rock, but it seemed eerily smooth and polished around the edges, as though it had been sucked right out from the bottom of a creek bed.
After the rock rested into its place in the grass before us, we both just sat there, our mouths gone dry, neither one of us able to utter even a solitary syllable. Birds chirped and an ice cream truck slowly passed, tinkling a little melody, oblivious to the incredible strangeness that had suddenly manifested itself out of nowhere. Meanwhile, the two of us remained petrified, motionless as statues, gaping at the rock in disbelief. Finally, Jessie spoke up. By the expression on his face, I could see that he was even more freaked out than I was.
Man, I had a dream like this two nights ago! he exclaimed. Only it wasnt a rock that came down out of the sky, but an orange. And the orange was smashed up to smithereens when it hit the ground. There was orange carcass spread everywhere, and I felt really bad for it, just as bad as I would have felt if I had seen an actual person all broken up like that. I mean, really sad and all.
Did you feel like you had known the orange personally or something? I asked him.
No, it wasnt like that, it was just as though I had seen someone die violently right in front of me, except it was an orange dyingweird."
Ive never even seen a dead person, I lamented.
Neither have I, but now I know how Id feel if I did, at least, he replied. Anyway, when I woke up from this dream, I was jonesing for some o.j. so bad, the first thing I did was ride my bike all the way down to the market to buy some. I bought the fresh-squeezed most-pulp variety. I hate that kind, I usually dont like any pulp at all in my o.j., but this time I was massively craving it, the pulpier the better, and when I got home, I drank almost the whole carton at once; my thirst for it was tremendous, man. You know, it must have been a message from my body to get some more Vitamin C, or something, Im telling you.
I nodded my head in complete agreement with him. He was right, the bodys got to talk to you any way it can. What better method than through dreams? Often I dream of pickles, so they must have some kind of nutrient that my tissues crave, and its not because of the shape of them or anything, so dont get any ideas.
But what could this fallen rock before us really mean? After Jessie told me about his dream, we both just sat there and stared at it some more. I couldnt remember ever dreaming about something falling from the sky. In fact, lately, I hadnt been able to recall any of my dreams too well. But right now Jessie was on a dream-remembering kick, and he was apt to garner all sorts of premonitions and meanings from them, many of which tended to come true--but always with an odd twist. Like this rock falling instead of an orange, the real-life results of his dreams were always just a tad bit off. In any case, neither one of us could come up with any explanations for the meanings behind this particular event, and all I really wanted to do now was go over and touch the rock. I noticed that it seemed to be dotted with little flecks of some lighter mineral, and while smooth on all sides, it did appear to have a slightly pitted texture, like a million miniscule craters. I had a powerful urge to slowly run a finger over every inch of its surface.
I dont know if we should touch it with our bare hands, man, Jessie said to me. It could have space germs on it.
Its not a meteorite, I replied. Meteorites arent as perfect-looking as that.
But it cant be from this planet, Jessie responded. How is that possible?
Havent you ever heard of weird stuff like toads and lizards raining down from the sky? I asked him. It has happened, man. Theres documented proof. Andshowering stones, too, its occurred all throughout history. Its even in the Bible, I think.
But where do they come from?
Nobody knows, I calmly replied. But Im going to go over there right now..and Im going to pick it up.

more to come...
