Good evening SG!
How are all this week? The last one of February, how are we nearly into the 3rd month of the year? Insane!
But we are getting better weather, better news and everything is starting to feel like it has a glimmer of hope.
For this weeks SGUK craft spotlight we spoke to our wee Scottish Suicide Girl @ghillie about cakes!
She is a lass of many talents but we were shook at her amazing cakes!
What got you into baking?
It was actually at the beginning of last year in February just before the lockdown happened.
It was my aunties birthday and I hadn’t had a chance to go out to the shops to buy her a present and I didn’t feel too comfortable going out to busy shops at the time with everything on the news, so I decided to try and bake her a cake as her gift!
I thought it would be more personal and she loves her food so it would be the perfect gift! She absolutely loved it, it turned out pretty well and other members of my family asked if I could make their cake as well so that’s when it all began!
Do you have a favourite kind of cake you prefer to make?
I normally make a vanilla sponge and fill it with buttercream.
Depending on the design of the cake, I sometimes cover it with fondant as well. I like to make cakes that have a theme because then I can just go a bit crazy with it.
I did art and design at school and always loved creative things.
I went on to do web development and graphic design at college and my full time job is mainly creating content, animations and graphics so I would say I do have a bit of an arty background.
Unfortunately as I haven’t been baking long, I wouldn’t say that I am so involved with the baking world yet to know of any famous bakers that inspire me.
I do however tend to follow a few bakers on Instagram and YouTube who I think are amazing at their craft and I love to see what they create next!
Haha! I would love to see that but I don’t think I’m quite there yet.
I don’t think it would make for good tv because when I’m making a cake I am the WORST.
I am forever thinking something is going to go wrong and hating on everything I do, it’s only when it gets to the final touches and it comes together that I can finally breathe and even then, it’s not until I get good feedback from my mum that I am truly happy with it!
If it meant I would have to eat it, it would probably be a chocolate cake with runny chocolate, or maybe a sticky toffee cake or a caramel cake 😱 oh god I don’t know. That is such a tough question!
I’m a nightmare when it comes to my hobbies, they are forever changing.
I tend to start a hobby, buy lots of stuff to do with it, do it for a while and then move on to something else. I’ve gone from sculpting with clay to sewing to knitting to cross-stitching to needle felting to baking and more.
I suppose my hobbies that have managed to stick around for all these years have been gaming, web development and creating digital graphics/animation.
Do you have any goals for 2021 in terms of your craft?
My goals for 2021 for baking is just to continue learning more about it. Learn new techniques and try some different styles.
I also really want to try a tiered cake so that will be my goal this year!
We would like to thank @ghillie for giving the time to speak to us about baking, it was a blast!
