last night read an interesting article on William Faulkner in The New York Review of Books (god, that sounds pretentious--nonetheless, that's one of the things I did last night)

anyway, came across the following bit (Estelle was Faulkners wife of many years):

"Estelle could never be disentangled from the deepest reaches of [Faulkner's] imagination," Karl writes. "Without Estelle...he could not have continued [to write]." She...

filled in last night at our minimum security prison camp (which I don't mind doing because, due to slightly staggered schedules instead of a soul-crushing 12-hour shift , I actually put in flitting-past-like-a-butterfly-on-a-spring-day 11-hour shift--altho I get paid the reg'lar amount)

this is about the third time I've done this, & it's a pretty good gig, but it's kind of wierd going from Maximum surroundings...

a few days ago I had to go to the doctor after a vicious attack at the prison.

(sounds pretty exciting, eh? not so. I was actually "attacked" by an icy sidewalk. it was, however, vicious indeed.)

anyway, let it be known that, for the next few weeks, there will be icy sidewalks all over the damn place.

& kids--if I have one piece of...

Silly putty... As this product will most probably be some day soon declared illegal, as are each and every fun stuff one after another, myToday's Advice For Kids will be: store as much as you can in some safe place! It won't be wasted, this thing has an incredible lifespan (especially when compared to many other synthetic material's, such as resin-based ones, etc.) I'm the proud owner of a silly putty ball that I've been gratified with when in (the French counterpart of) sixth grade, and it still has kept intact all its wonderful properties.

Catch it, Rats!

...then something interesting happened.

I can't remember what it was, but it kept me from committing suicide...

"....Frankly, I can't remember if we committed suicide that night, or not" (Borges)

Seriously, I like it when interesting things do happen! My main issue for now is precisely a lack of interesting things happening. What was it? was it good to eat?

took little niece (6-year old drama queen) & little nephew (8-year old video-game addict) to the park today.

the park in question is pretty much nothing but grass , with a little concrete-lined crick running thru a corner of it. (It's across the street from what is now a Middle School, but was my High School approximately 12 thousand years ago. when I was in...

great article from the always-excellent Jim Knipfel in NYPress this week:

they'll murderize ya fer a dollar!

a quote:

Hell, when I was a kid, if there was absolutely no chance that a toy could maim or kill you somehow, that toy wasn't worth shit.

We scraped our knees and elbows, played with matches, tore our clothes, got in horrible fights, played in abandoned factories,...

sign I'm getting older:

surfing around on the internet earlier (something I don't do very often) with realplayer playing in the background on random shuffle.

the drive by truckers "Let There Be Rock" came on & I (of course) turned it up & started to air guitar.

I got winded halfway thru.

a bit later tom waits' "Make It Rain" came on & I settled...

Really, I wish prison was meant for reform and change, and not just to house criminals. But as it stands now...you're right, prison is an awful place to be.
This guy deserves to be there though. I hope he stays there for a long time.

great lyrics! thanks for sharing 'em.

oy.

monday morning, & I'm drunk.

first: feeling guilty because I've gotten a number of lovely emails & letters from friends that I haven't gotten around to answering (yo, Tororo--soon)

which is weird, because writing is what I do, is what I love to do, is what I LIVE to do--

but I just can't do no more.

more later.

Yo, rats'!
tororo:
Of course I've lots more to say... but
a) I just read in a row both the poem you posted in my journal AND the one you posted in Morgan's, and i've been struck mute by their awesomeness
b) I thought it was fashionable to post just a single 'yo, rats'!" as a comment; Isn't it what you Americans use to call "cool"?

part of an email sent this morning:

anyway: last night:

in the first couple of hours I was a part of a group of officers to do a shake-down of a unit.

a unit isn't usually shaken down unless something serious like a rash of stabbings or a tip-off of a gang war or some such.

in this case, an inmate (apparently) fell off the...
