I'm moving to Japan in, like, 2 days. Whoa.

It's unnerving not knowing how long I'll be there, and people keep asking me. The minimum is one year, since I signed a work contract for that amount of time. The maximum is, well, permanently, since if I marry H-- it makes more sense for us to be in Japan than in the U.S. And even...

You're gonna be so far, but soooo happy!!! I can't wait to hear all your stories, and to maybe possibly hear you speak a little Japanese? Yes? I love you, Lola! And I'm so excited for this new chapter in your life!!! Just tell people that you'll be there for as long as you're there! Meanwhile, I'll start saving up for a ticket to visit!

Yeah she already knows. Im a fairly straight forward guy. She likes it the way it is, and she wants to deal with what she has before complicating her life. I can respect that, and wouldn't get involved with someone who will better deal her partner behind their back.

Looks like you are having fun smile Kyouto is a great place, especially the samurai movie set. Ahh how I envy you...that curry picture was honto natsukashii! I lived in Akita prefecture (in the north) and loved it, travelled around Japan quite extensively for having only lived there for a year. I think the best visit was to Sapporo for a week for the snow festival...they have heated sidewalks.

You should do fine there, linguistically speaking, as long as you stick to major cities. A year after I left, a friend went over for awhile and i Helped him adjust (via email) in his first 3 weeks in Sendai....and he didn't know any Japanese, nor did he want to learn. As long as you are trying, you'll kick ass! :-D

Do you know what's a weird feeling? Saying to someone, "I'll see you in a few days," when you haven't seen that person in a few years.

OK, Life. I'm comin' for ya.

Also, here's a picture of me in my Halloween costume. I wasn't going to dress up. I love dressing up, but I didn't have the energy to plan anything this year. In...

This time next week, I'll be in Japan, reunited with H--. I'm only staying 10 days this time, but the official move is in December. It's all happening so quickly now. It's very strange, but I'm very happy.

I'm thinking about my friend S--. I haven't spoken to her since the spring. I remember this time last year I went to visit her in the treatment center where she was at the time. I'm not sure where she is now. I know she's not in the same treatment center because I tried calling there a month or so ago and they told me...

I'm trying to figure out how to have a going away party that doesn't center around alcohol consumption. And I'm sick of people wanting me to justify why I don't want to have a party at a bar.

I rarely drink. I don't enjoy it. And I don't want to go to a bar. The end.

or your friends should be throwing the party, or just make an announcement: So Long, Thanks for all the fish and have a nice dinner with your friends before you depart
deceptiviewfilm:
thats sad. If you want to, throw a small get together. Invite some people and ENJOY yourself. It maybe a long time before you see these NYers anytime soon or again. do it for yourself.

It is only now occurring to me that I'm high maintenance. I somewhat jokingly (but not really) told H-- that I wanted to make sure I found an English-speaking hairstylist in Kyoto. He said he'd already thought of that. On the one hand, he's amazing; on the other hand, that's a ridiculous priority for me to have.

Uh... no it's not. You can't reattach hair to the head once it's come off so you want to make sure your stylist understands what you want so you won't walk out with David Bowie's mullet
galaxy42:
What's wrong with David Bowie's mullet?

Them's fightin' words....

It's really cute how H-- is so enthusiastic about my Japanese, even though I know it's crappy.

! If that was even right, it means I'm doing my best.

It's getting annoying to see people act surprised, or try to hide being surprised, when they find out my boyfriend isn't of the same race or ethnic background as myself. Could some people at least gesture towards not being racist?
knives2meatyou:
You expect that from certain sections of society in this country, which hardly excuses it but doesn't change the fact that you expect it. It's when it comes from people you had respected, people who you thought were better than that, that it really hurts. Which is not to say there isn't racism and ethnic prejudice everywhere in the world. We just like to believe we're better than that, when we aren't.

Im all for sterilization.

Because of some worries about visa processing times between my November vacation and my December move to Kyoto, I've now scheduled my November vacation to be a week earlier.

In about a month, I get to see H--. For the first time in two and a half years. Very exciting.

I'm aware as I'm living this that it makes for quite a story.
