This is the first time I've ever gone public with an obsession of mine. My fingers are shaking. My mouth is dry. My eyes are blood shot. My gym shorts are dirty. I'm having trouble sleeping. It's that time again.
The iPod draft.
Ever since I was limited to 20 gigs at a time, I've had seasonal updates to ensure I'm moving towards the best 20 gigs I can be. It usually requires me locking my door, turning off the phone and hunkering down with a lot of new music that I've otherwise ignored. Don't think I'm not a constant addict: I am. I've got five new CDs coming in *a day*. And I'm not counting my monthly ( and often extremely choice ) 40 picks from eMusic. That shit will build up after a while. So, I fire up WinAmp and get picking. Nothing goes through that USB cable untouched. I don't have the room for error like that. Cut out intros, outros and skits. Is that cover better than this one? More importantly, is it better than the original? Yes? How interesting. What about the live album? It's got the fire, but the mixing is for shit. Do I really need the Carlos D remix? Oh, that's deleted - Pitchfork rated it too highly.
I'm still looking for the Sarah Slean album. Saw her open for Rasputina and was so stupid as to not buy her LP there. GAH. However, I did manage to find new music from Ash, Skindred, Dropping Daylight, Jakalope, (International) Noise Conspiracy, Los Halos, Skeewiff, Grand Buffet, Lionrock, Sense Field, Asobi Seksu, Dub Pistols, The Specials, Punchline, The Herbaliser, Beta Band, The Grates, Zeromancer, Ted Leo and Goldfrapp. I finally FINALLY found the Black Sheep album I was looking for. My favorite finds have to be the Skindred b-sides, The Toasters and Duran Duran covering 'White Lines'. Replaced some bad cuts with better versions off Mike Doughty's first solo album. And alright, I'll fuckin' admit it... I added more tracks off Punk Goes 80's. If only for the Early November cover of 'Power of Love'. I god damn grew up on Back to the Future - give me a break. I need to get a better copy of the Outernational EP. My efforts to find ska covers of metal fell short. I did find Agent Orange covering Metallica's 'Seek and Destroy' to go with Link 80's 'Harvester of Sorrow'. James Hetfield should've learned trombone after his hand got blown off. People are so much more accepting of short hair when you're rocking the brass. Speaking of which, Catch 22's new album turned out meh. Whole Wheat Bread's touring with Reel Big Fish, so I dug out that LP and found out I did like it. Three tracks off that...
It's hard being an addict. I've got over a hundred albums piled up for me to listen to at any time. Right now, I'm going to spend the afternoon going through three A Tribe Called Quest albums, a Notwist album, one from Jawbreaker, a Quarashi import from Japan and the best of Fishbone. I've got to lock this up tonight at 8 pm. The draft ends. I know that's what I said last night, but I need to get back to writing. I've got to finish the outline of the comic I promised to Kat. Still got a lot to put towards the novel as well. Half of Boston thinks I'm already published after this weekend. Gotta keep going. Needs caffeine.
