well, just over one week down at the new job. I'm starting to get the "hang" of things. at least in some ways. such as the following:
1. talked with a kid today that was sent down by a teacher. very low functioning with a speech impediment. yeah, it was interesting...he was tough to follow!
2. starting to pick up on kids. one student has mandated counseling on his IEP. he also hates surprises. I'm having him come down Monday morning and scheduling a meeting time each week. that way he takes some initiative, has some control. and no surprises.
3. however, I have one kid who won't talk to me. the social worker said he went about 3 or 4 years without talking to her. suggestions anyone to get him to talk to me?
4. developed a group idea. basically modified the curriculum for a new students group to a first-generation college student group. could be interesting!
well, that's about it...time for bed!
laters all!

As for the kid that wont speak. Try sand play. Get a box, doesn't have to be huge or anything and fill it with some nice sand. Maybe have a few toys as well like trucks or dinosaurs. Then sit around it with the kid. Even if he just runs his fingers through it, its somewhat therapeutic. Apparently it really opens them up as well. But if theres no sand, maybe even finger painting or something. Good luck with it. Let me know if you get to try it.
