I made it. I'm a bit stiff, and rather exhausted but in good order. No blisters.

I was out at 9 AM sharp (a bit later than planned) and back at 2:24 PM, covering a bit over 16.5 miles in that time frame, which means I averaged slightly over 3 mph- which was my target speed for this time.

It was another gray, cool day. Gloomy for the most part; the way I like it. My element.

I still had to take off my glasses, early on. It was obvious they were not going to stay on well. So if the pictures aren't perfect, remember as well as being a cell-phone camera... I was shooting blind, to a degree...

The light was mixed. The sun never broke through, but it occasionally came quite close. The fact it did not was good... towards the end I was getting (slight) chills, a sign I was right at my limit. I carried four bottles of water and used every last bit.

Some of this you have seen before... some of this you have not. I'm dividing it into four sections- "The Old Walk" (ground I've covered before on the way out; there are still some new things), "Onwards." (the new ground covered getting to the bridge), "There!" (at the bridge), and "...and Back Again" (the whole walk back).

The Old Walk

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

Driveway, 9 AM

"Line of Sight"

Waypoint 1, 0.75 mile, 9:15 AM (or "Good Lord, what have gotten myself into?")

"Life Happens" (...and survives in the most unlikely places)

"The First Bridge"

"The Road Not Taken" (side road)

"Trucks- good for breezes, scary as hell." More than once I was a yard or so from one zooming by at 60.

Approaching the Cell Tower

"Abandoned... or what?" (it had a barbeque pit with a very rusty tin roof next to it...)

"Up and Around"

"The Long Road Ahead"

"Abandoned... or what?, Part 2"

"The Mailbox"

Silos

"A gray kind of day..."

Another road not taken...

"The name is Shed. Blue Shed."

5.75 and counting...

Approaching the water tower...

Water works for the country life...

And here we are at the tower.

And yet, it stands...

Here be dragons...

Onwards.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

The road stretches on...

Vast tracts of land...

Yet another road not taken.

Horsies!

The water treatment plant. I remember when there wasn't a fence... but then the Joker... wink

Getting close...

I think...

YES!

"Crossing the line..."

There!

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

A time for reflection...

"Water under the bridge"

"The Far Side"

The Way Back... (or, "It's All (well, mostly) Uphill from Here)

Another look at the water...

A castle? wink

...and Back Again

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

Horsie!

Horsie!!!!!!!!

Back to the tower...

Old cars...

10.75 down, 5.75 to go...

He decided I wasn't going to drop, after all, and off he majestically glided...

Off in the distance, the tower looms...

Close...

Closest

I'm going to make it!

0.75 out. I can do that. Really. (Alright, feet, get moving again!)

And I made it back.

I have been resting since, and I've found something out... if I push myself hard enough, when I finally rest, I have... visions. If I close my eyes, I see things. I have seen more than I could write in a week since I got back. It's a pity I can't DVR my brain.

But I make all of you, my friends, an offer- if you need a vision, let me know. I'll do this again, and give you one. Or if you'd like, I'll just tell you what I saw on my way that was unusual. Who knows? You may find meaning in it...

But, this said, for my part, while I am going to keep walking distances, and trying to increase my range... I think it will have to be on a track, unless such a request is made.

And that's the story of my Wednesday's journey.

I would not consider L.A. to be Southwestern either. biggrin Noir is my first love in cinema. Neo-Noir is ok, but sometimes really pays off. L.A. Confidential is one example of awesome Neo-Noir. In my opinion.

I really like that movie. The book is really pretty good too. You are right that not much happens, but hey, a little southern scenery chewing is ok once in awhile. I love Georgia so movies taking place there always fascinate me.
