This is why I shouldn't read contemporary authors.

Kerouac wrote his masterpieces in about a day. I hate him for that.
Well over a year since I've written anything but the occassional long, drunken rant about my life (and that can only be considered 'art' in the sense that street theatre is 'art,' which is to say it's not, but reflects some characteristics of the real thing).
This is starting to get to me.
Bret Easton Ellis wrote his first major novel for a class. Undergraduate creative writing.
Carson McCullers was my age when she wrote her classic, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.
You see where I'm going with this.

I have this itching need to lock myself in my apartment for a week with a carton of cigarettes and a few bottles of Jameson, and just fucking write.
These things still happen. If I have anywhere near the talent people have tried to impress upon me as being mine, I could be a well-to-do author within a year. Lobster dinners in fancy New York restaurants. Drinking imported beers with members of Interpol. The American Dream, right?

Fuck me.

more like beating up bums and stomping on their pets, though you can do that in your current location and/or state of mind.

i used to freak out about the fact that ani difranco was who she was at 19. and that leonard cohen had a country band in his early years, and i've already surpassed these ages.

but then, i think that's nonsense, and do currently. 27 is so young. 23 is a helluva lot younger.

the end of last year, a certain amount of sucess came out and bit my ass--writing for a local fashion magazine, a circulation of 10,000 in print, with 125,000 hits on the website per month. people ARE reading what i'm writing. it's amazing. and when i published my book, i was 22. that's been roughly a 5 year gap of relative suckiness/obscurity. now, i VIP and press access to most every fashion related event in town.

this is not to brag, but to point out how things happen suddenly.

you're gonna be alright.

and as for my winter, it's been the same old, same old. sucky breakup in january after brief relationship that didn't really work from day one, followed by a dramatic uptick in positive circumstance in february.

the usual.
