I'm OK, finally.
I left the office yesterday afternoon to try to find a way out of the city. US 90 was still open, so I crossed to the West Bank and drove 200 miles west to Lafayette, where I could pick up I-10 east and then I-55 north. I'm in Spring Hill, Tennessee now, at my parents' house.
The drive here was crazy. All of southern Mississippi up to Jackson was without power, and north Jackson all the way to Meridian was also without power. On the way from NO to Birmingham, Alabama, I saw three cities/towns that had power and two powered rest stops. I spent last night at a Days Inn in Birmingham (the first city I came to that had any available hotel rooms) and arrived in Spring Hill this afternoon.
I'm waiting for a nearby Walgreens to call here to let me know that my insurance provider has approved overrides for refills of my prescription drugs, all of which are controlled substances. I've been in SSRI withdrawal since yesterday morning.
Chances are very good that my home was destroyed. If that is the case, I have nothing but the clothes I now wear and my car. Once communication improves in the NO area, I'll call State Farm and see about getting my write-off cheque, which should be for about $10,000. After that, I don't know if I'll return to NO or find someplace else to live, preferably somewhere that isn't quite as prone to extreme natural disasters.
Also, watching the storm rip apart the city from a 10th floor window was the worst thing I'd ever seen. The aftermath, with all the debris and felled trees everywhere, well, that was the worst, too. An eerie side effect was looking out the window after dark and seeing nothing but darkness looking back. Normally you wouldn't expect a downtown area to be completely void of light. It was fucking creepy.
My cell phone doesn't work at all. No reception. Though I can receive text messages. So if you've tried calling, you probably got the "all circuits are busy" message. I can't check my voicemail, so I don't know if anyone's left any.
My kitties... are probably dead. *cry*
