Sean is kind of a jerk.

On Saturday I received a message purporting to be from the year 2102 from someone instructing me to collect and preserve a very specific set of data following an elaborate procedure. The author of the message claims to be contacting me in particular because he accidentally discovered the data in his time and included with the data is instructions to contact me in the past and send me the message I received verbatim. He has also asked me to include his letter to me with the data, with a set of instructions to whoever finds the data that he claims he is now following. The message says this data, which seems not very valuable or important to me, will ensure the survival of the entire human race.

Watching TV has taught me messages sent back in time are almost always sent in order to ensure the survival of the entire human race, so no big shock when I read that part.

Included in this message with the intent of allowing me to verify its authenticity are the high and low temperature of the day for Vancouver for the following dates: 1/1/2010, 1/2/2010, 1/10/2010, 1/11/2010 and 1/12/2010. I have agreed in my mind to collect the data and follow the elaborate instructions if all ten numbers match up to what the actual highs and lows are. But, just so I don't waste a huge amount of time on this if it's bullshit, can anyone tell me if there is any way to know what the highs and lows would be exactly for 5 days in a particular location? Is this something easy to predict or model?

It is possible to predict, but I forgot how to do it.

weather prediction is far from an exact science. being able to hit both the high and low temperatures for 5 days exactly would be extremely difficult. plus, you would really need to know where they wanted the data collected from, since values can vary quite a bit over a major metropolitan area.

Vancouver varies enough that I'd say if they were on the nose every day then the message must be from the future, Sean! But the other question is which PWA did they use? There are about 10 major weather recording stations in Vancouver and the temperature always varies by a couple of degreesC throughout the city. We could assume they mean the YVR station as that's what most people use/refer to? I would check out http://wunderground.com or http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/canada_e.html
