I've been a big, big fan of Mike Allred's work since I picked up MADMAN COMICS back at Don Parker's Records and Comics in Milford, Ohio in my early high school days. There was always a spiritual aspect to his work in some form or another, usually a Christ-like figure in the form of Frank Einstein or in the pages of Red Rocket 7. I wasn't down with it, but I rolled with it. I liked his pop art inspired pencils, Laura's bright colors, and the themes of love and redemption that ran through his work. I even followed him to Marvel when he took over the art chores on X-FORCE, and later X-STATIX, even though he wasn't going to be writing his own scripts, and even though I'm not all that interested in super hero books these days. I really dug X-FORCE at first, but I think the series has been suffering since U-Go Girl was killed off. It was an interesting and dynamic choice, but the result was that the most interesting and dynamic *character* was now absent from the book. They had some difficulties in their recent "Back from the Dead" storyline, and though they tried their best to save the story from being butchered by editorial edicts, it fell flat in the end. And with the new regime in place at Marvel, it seemed that X-STATIX was the last holdout from the Marvel Revolution from a few years ago.

Well, Allred has been hinting at new projects just over the horizon for some time, including a new Madman series, and a super secret project he sounded really excited about. On his message board he recently announced the end of X-STATIX with issue 26, and his next project--adapting the entire Book of Mormon into comics form.

He always came across as a spiritual dude, but I didn't know Allred was a practicing Mormon. In the post he alludes to some kind of spiritual awakening in recent years that led him back to the church he hasn't been a part of in years, and he sounds like a true believer. He's using terms like "Light of Christ" and he's calling the Book of Mormon (the original, not his adaptation) the source of absolute Truth in the universe.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about all of this. I'm an open-minded guy, and though once again this isn't my bag, I'm all for Allred expanding his artistic horizons and the horizons of comics and doing something outside the mainstream. But it sounds pretty preachy--it sounds like his intent is, one, to show his appreciation and love for this book that means so much to him, which is entirely fine; and two, to lead his readers to the Truth and the Light of Christ, which exists in all things. That's the thing that I get stuck on. I imagine it's simply my own attitude and prejudices toward religion coming through, but I'm a little disappointed that one of my favorite creative types is doing something I disagree with spiritually and philosophically. But when you're an artist, you have to work on what you have to work on. I'll check it out when it comes out, and I hope it's the sort of book the non-believers can enjoy too.

But man, if he ever goes back to telling Frank Einstein's story, and if it ever matches the stories he was telling in the mid-90's, I'll do a backflip.

Wow. I have to say, as a longtime Allred fan myself, I'm pretty disturbed by this new project of his. I'm all for new ventures... but, you're right -- this sounds way too preachy to be real...

Far cry from Creatures of the Id, innit?

I first found out about him when I bought back issues of Megaton in the late 80s to get the old Erik Larson Dragon and Vanguard stories.

I always liked him. Even when he would do work for the big three, and would be handed the same plate as everyone else, it was worth at least checking out because you were sure that he was going to arrange it into something totally new and fresh; now if it would be something you would like or not...

Im going to have to stay away from this new book though. There is very little I actually hate, but for some reason being preached at or 'shown the true way' or 'cast unto the light' or any other metaphor for my upcoming spiritual awakening just makes me angry.

Frank should come back .yes, yes , yes.

Hmmmm....I too am a big Allred fan, and have been loyaly purchasing and enjoying X-Statix and X-Force. In fact, I've enjoyed the X books even better than Red Rocket and Madman. He has an interesting vision, and I'm frankly dissapointed that he's now going to adapt another work, yet alone the Book of Mormon(!)...

I'm not even sure his art would be appropriate for a religious book - it might make the whole thing backfire come of as a parody! Maybe it's a hoax??

I'm with you on the religion kick...I got a little freaked out when Al Green went religious and basically stopped singing anything but Gospel...I must admit I'll be purchasing Allred's Book of Mormon, out of curiosity if nothing else!

the religion thing can be a tough hurdle for me, especially when they are proselytizing. it's funny i can forgive other artists for so many faults/ sicknesses and claim that i am in it for the art, not their personal choices in life. but the religion thing pushes me over. i guess when they are trying to convert me i feel like i am being subjected to their agenda. it's proactive - no longer a story, but now a command. but where it is good enough, you can still appreciate the art in some way.

quick funny story about mormons. i was born into a jewish family (or the tattered semblance of one anyway). yet, i am about as jewish as a ham sandwhich. at least when it comes to religion (culturally, i am down with the tribe). anyway, a while ago i played music with this drummer who was mormon and we would practice in his parents' garage. afterward, they would sometimes feed us dinner. after one practice we sat down to the table and his dad asked me "tribe of judah or tribe of jacob?" or something to that effect. i quizzically responded with a "huh?" he repeated the question. i told him i wasn't really sure. he then looked at me with a true sense of compassion, a sense of brotherhood and said "you know, us mormons are israelities too." i felt like woody allen, dressed as a hassidim. "sure," i said, "that's great." so mormons are israleities too, whatever the hell that means.

I'm digging the new pic.
It's been a while, eh?

It appears that's all I've got for now.
