MEMBER SINCE: May 2012
occupation: Photographer
makes me sad: creative stagnation, money, politics
heroes: Doc Hammer, Jackson Publick, Chase Jarvis, Zack Arias, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dean Bradshaw
crush: none
sign: Aries
body mods: a few tattoos
into: DJing, My Neighborhood (Lower Garden District, New Orleans), IDM, Glitch-Hop, Midtempo, House, D&B, Cameras, Sneakers, MIDI Controllers, off-camera lighting
makes me happy: coaxing a photo project to fruition, Sazeracs, Bacon Pralines, IDM played out on big club soundsystems.
gets me hot: nerdism, prescription glasses (if you don't need them, don't wear them), short haircuts
i lost my virginity: in a beautiful but terribly suburban and mundane way.
I suppose an appropriate 1st blog entry here would be a quick introduction.
I'm Donovan, and I'm a photographer. Or at least, I'm trying to be one. I've had a long long past of showing above average ability in most creative endeavors I put my mind to, and then fizzling out in a whimper of waning enthusiasm and broken confidence.
Photography is one of only two interests of mine that have remained since I started them. (The other one is DJing. I've been a DJ for much longer, but it's not the topic of my intro.)
In around 2006 or 2007, I bought my first DSLR, a Nikon D200 with a kit 18mm-135mm lens, and started in earnest to recapture that passion I'd once felt years past with film SLRs. Looking back on that work, I shudder with mediocrity, but it has the mark of someone striving for greater things. The quality is not there, but the desire for improvement in evident.
In the time since, I've taught myself much in the way of lighting technique, upgraded my camera loadout, and made a small name for myself in certain New Orleans circles... I'm wanting to expand and desire this encompassing enough of my life to make a living though it. I'm aware of the odds, and increasingly aware of the risks. I find myself lazier than I'd like at times and think,"This is exactly how you're going to fail. GET UP."
So, I'm trying to GET UP... Trying to put myself out there more, trying to find new ways to beef up my visual arsenal of techniques and schemes.
Which is partly why I'm here.
