I won a minor victory for myself yesterday...
After attending a meeting with the caterer for the End of Year Theatre Banquet (which I'm coordinating for school), I headed out to the bus stop. It was a bit sunny for my taste so I put on my clip-ons (which, of course, temporarily prevented me from playing my SP).
Eventually, the bus pulled up and I got on. Unfortunately, the spot I usually sit (first forward facing window seat on the right) was already taken. However, it's current occupant was a cute girl with glasses - so I settled for sitting on the adjacent bench seat.
I took off my clip-ons and pulled out my GameBoy to play some Harvest Moon (my in-game son had recent started crawling). Periodically, I would glance to my side and enjoy the feeling of looking at somebody attractive.
By the time we reached the last stop in fairless square, the bus driver announced that we would be there a little while because something was wrong with the bus. Most of the passengers disembarked (and headed for the #20 that pulled in ahead of us), except for me and the girl in spectacles (though one of the other passengers got back on later).
I jokingly compared the rest of the people to rats on a sinking ship and got a smile from the girl. Noting the essay book she was reading, I commented on how helpful it was to have entertainment for riding the bus.
A little later, she got up and I thought she was getting off the bus. She asked the driver if he thought the next 19 would be along before the bus got fixed. He said a repair truck was on its way, but he wasn't sure. She returned to her seat.
Once the repair guy arrived, the driver and him discussed the buses battery and ended up charging it so the driver could make it to gateway. As I heard the back compartment of the bus slam shut, I remarked that we should be on our way shortly.
As the trip continued and more passengers got on, I considered talking to the girl some more. But, uncertain what to say, I just sat there with my SP and glancing at her. Occasionally, her head would be up from her book and I'd give a friendly smile.
A bit later, a voice in my head kept bugging me to talk to her. My hands starting to get sweating from nerves. My stop growing ever closer, I resolved myself that I must at least ask for her number before I had to get off.
More stops passed and the little voice in my head berated me for hiding behind my GameBoy. I eventally concieded, saving my game and putting it away. I wiped my hands off on my pants and the bus pressed on.
'I'm running out of time,' I thought to myself as the bus got caught by the light only 3 stops away from mine. Somebody rung the bell for the next stop and I thought, 'it's now or never.' I turned to the girl.
"I don't mean to bother you," I said, getting her attention. "But, I find you attractive and was wondering if I could get your phone number or e-mail..." My heart was beating rapidly.
She smiled at me politely, "I'm sorry, I don't give it out."
Although somewhat disappointed, I was able to keep it together. "That's okay," I responded, "I just had to ask - it was something I needed to do for myself."
Thankfully, it was my stop and I got off the bus - wishing the driver a "good one", as I always do, and heading home...

just think how much easier it's going to be next time. and how great it's going to be when you meet the right girl that's lucky enough to give you her number.
