Narshada Welcome to the future - it's broken!

There's bloggery afoot...

So, another week gone, and I've had little chance to check out SG again. Bah. Wish I still had my old office.

Anyway, this week I got annoyed at being told to help out with some stuff that was basically data entry after spending the first part of the week programming an intranet site that does some rather clever things if I do say so myself. I kept it to myself as I didn't want to seem up my own arse, but really I didn't do 3 years at uni to do data entry.
Work stuff ahead - not too much of a moan but you might want to skip it, so:

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

I'm beginning to feel rather under-appreciated and I'm thinking of getting the fuck out of there. I've been doing lots of reading and coding this last week and I'm confident that I could now write some pretty sophisticated websites, including database driven ones, (haven't done it yet, but it looks fairly straightforward actually,) although I couldn't do e-commerce sites yet, but I think I could probably learn how.
In addition I also know how to set up and maintain a web server and I have plenty of experience in photoshop for the web so I'm starting to consider the idea of setting up my own business/going freelance. I could do everything from start to finish - write the code, design the site and even set up hosting. At the moment it's just a thought, but one I'm considering more and more seriously. I have a year left to pay back a loan I took out and my boss wants us all to read books he's got on web marketing etc, so I think I'll stay where I am for the next year, rinse those books and create a little file of stuff for myself, (which will make me look really eager and score me brownie points at work,) which I could then take to the bank as research etc.
My immediate manager is also I would guess in the top 10 in the country, (possibly top 5,) for web marketing - he's had people from Google comment on how well he does his job, (seriously, our MD does not appreciate some of the talent he has working for him,) so I'll rinse him for knowledge too. He's said he's going to set up on his own in the not too distant future and has always said he'd give me a job as soon as he was up & running. We get on really well both personally and professionally and I think we'd make a good team, so I'm going to pitch the idea to him about setting up together.

Now on to the big news:

ME AND PINKS HAVE GOT A FLAT! WOO McFUCKING HOO!
It's in the area we wanted and for the price we wanted. The bedroom is huge and the lounge is big. The bathroom is a little small, but not too bad and the kitchen is a little bit pokey but there's really only going to be one of us in there most times. Anyway, it's really nice and there is a little back garden for the kids, (cats,) and it has great views of the suspension bridge and Hotwells from the lounge window.
We've just paid the deposit and agency fees this morning and pending references, we move in on the 1st August.
Hot shit.

Last Friday we met up with the Bristol Massive, including the lovely Nikhita:

Bristol's number 1 Dallas Green impersonator, Kristoph and my favourite age-related jokester TheKnives:

and the always enigmatic Zamuzel:

for drinks:

Couple of random photos:

I saw this in my mate Dave's house. I'm secretly hoping he'll give us it as a housewarming gift, but I doubt it as his mum probably made it or something.

This for Ortus for his "faces in strange places" project.

Lastly, I finally resurrected my webcomic, Exotic Soup, last week after a 10 month hiatus. I'll try and get another one done tomorrow, but here's the latest one:
Exotic Soup
It seems like , Webcomicsnation where my comic is hosted, is not loading at present, so try again later. Unfortunately, my own site is down at present as I can't afford to renew the hosting, but I might look into hosting it myself in the near future.

I love Travis! His face when he comes down the stairs in the first strip he's in is totally adorable. He always looks so scared. And yes, I like the new look a lot.

So congrats on the comic resurrection and extra congrats on your new place!

yaya!! well done on the new flat for you and Zoe - thats great news! house warming!
definatly go with the idea of pitching to your immediate manager for starting up on your own- sounds like a good plan.

i get to see you and zoe at Fry's for Brighton! i'm really looking forward to it, i've not seen you two for ages - and i want to give you a big hug for the help over the past few weeks. *hugs*

Hot shit indeed to the flat. Room for the cats is the best selling point as far as I'm concerned. wink I second Killa's request for a housewarming!

Congratulations on the flat. I'm pretty sure it's now compulsory for you to now hold a massive house warming for us all wink

If you think their are clients out there for what you do then go self employed mate, at the very least you'll end up paying less money to Gordon Brown. Sounds like your immediate boss is the person to talk to but do make sure there is a way of selling what you can do and that their are people out their willing to pay for it.

That's cool with me dude biggrin

I actually want the artwork a lot more than the shoes now I know what they're made of frown

Hope you're having a cracking weekend.

Congrats on the flat love, that's a right result and after reading your blog, it sounds to me like you've got a plan in place. Stay with the existing employer and rinse them good. Then do your own thing. Or like you said, see what goes with your boss. I can only say that while it's hard-going sometimes and I miss the regular wages, I've run my own business for almost 4 years and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Keep us posted smile

xx

Web design sounds like it could be an interesting side project without having to give up the stability of the day-to-day grind. Definitely something worth exploring. At the end of the day we all want a job we're actually interested in doing, and if that job can be done in underpants and a string vest at home, then that my friend is certified win!

biggrin

Housewarming thirded, fourthed, or fifthed and motion carried.

Thanks for the pic. Safely filed away with all the rest. Keep your eyes peeled for more. Those pesky faces are everywhere. wink

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
Edit: the intentional mistake is the pic on the wall. Keep them comics coming. I like. I came across another comic this week. Here's a sample. Let me know if you like and I'll mail you the ones I have.
