The way I've come to see things, people who say you make your own luck are only partly right. We don't get to choose our parents and even if they love us with all their hearts, they may not get that message across to us nearly as well as they intended. We also don't get to choose what happens to us as young children, so by the time we grow up, most of us aren't that skilled at being happy, but we get by somehow and usually try to hide our problems from the world.

Just by being brave enough to admit to feeling less than wonderful, you've taken a huge step toward a better life. It takes a long time and much searching to recognize where we can find some greater truth than what we have thus far, but you are doing it, so be patient with yourself. It was very creative and inspired to come here and discover that your ex was not the greatest judge of beauty in the world, nor the most thoughtful or kind person out there. It's an impressive piece of problem solving and I'd say you're doing great. You know what they say about a journey of a thousand miles.
