Good. Now that you've got it, I can finish. What a movie. Spectacular. I mean, really. It's a classic film noir, set in modern times. A gritty detective story, in a high school. Crime, drugs, a missing love, murder, moms and apple juice.

Rian Johnson's direction was on the mark. I smelled dirty teenaged hair watching this movie. That's how good this guy is. Johnson hasn't directed a ton of movies, so far just Brick and something called Evil Demon Golfball from Hell!!! (1996). And he edited the film "May" (2002).

Most surprising in the cast was Joseph Gordon-Levitt - who was, dare I say it? sexy! I guess I feel guilty feeling attracted to him because he was that cute kid from Third Rock from the Sun, and in syndication, he's still about 10 or 12 years old. I'm creepy. Regardless, he was hot in this movie, H-O-T. Steamy hot. And he kicked some serious ass. He took down a football player, a dope-head and some dude brandishing a knife - and I believed it. Gordon-Levitt's character, Brendan Frye* was witty as hell - I found myself laughing where, in a real-life situation, I'd get my ass kicked.

Also gracing the cast was Emilie de Ravin (Lost), Richard Roundtree (Shaft!!!!), and Lukas Haas. That last one gave me some trouble. All through the movie it was bugging the hell out of me, couldn't figure who he was. I had to get on the computer and find out as soon as the credits were rolling - he was the little kid from "Witness." Drove me nuts. I feel better now.

Anyway, the best advice I could possibly give you for several hours(ish) of solid entertainment is to rent this movie. Oh, and as for my little * maybe it's just me, but whenever someone is named "Frye" in real life or in films I can't help but think of Philip J. Fry and giggle.

Yes, I waited a very long time for Brick to come out. It was awsome. Definatly a must buy/rent for anybody. But untill your post I did not realize he edited May. Hah, that's kick ass. If you haven't seen it, rent it. It's a rather odd little horror movie. Take it easy.

Brick is indeed the shiznnit. I saw the ads but missed the movie when it came through town at the art-houses. (The Globe, Uptown, and Plaza if you've not yet been informed, although the Plaza has slipped a bit off the arthouse scene but tries to maintain cred with Rocky Horror Picture Show every long weekend.) Fortunately I managed to find it through "alternate means" ARRR!!! which isn't the best quality but almost adds to the noir feel, although grainy resolution can't compensate for a silver screen. I did make popcorn, though.

I don't think you should feel guily about finding JG-L sexy. He's all growed up, and in fact only a couple months younger than you. Embrace it.

I felt the same way about Alyssa Milano, thinking she was way too young on Who's the Boss and then finding out she's actually two days older than me. And, of course, continuously getting hotter. Like Joe-Gord-Lev is for you, presumably.
