You know when you go to certain cities (sometimes) the great things stick in your head. Well for me Winnipeg will be filled with cute french girls who like free jazz, l'alcool gratuit, great radio, decadent summer heat, and Mondragon - a coffeehouse/alternative bookstore run by an anarchist collective.

The Yo La Tengo show is still echoing in my head. I can't believe the last song they played (in the final of 3 encores) was a request of mine. "I Found a Reason" by the Velvet Underground. Amazing stuff. They did a set of everything.. from soft melodic music, to insane feedback drenched rock, to funky piano tracks, to stuff off Nuclear War and the new album Summer Sun. I had no idea they were all so multi-talented! They all switched instruments practically every song! The Vogue is a great venue, I'd never seen a show there before, but it easily trumps ANY venue from my town.

I'm at the NCRA conference in Winnipeg. Yes I'm blogging from the road.

We drove across BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba all in 2 days. Look at that on a map people.. it's a long distance.

Road trips are fun though.. lots of stops (my comrades frequently had to pee). Lots of Kit Kat bars. (be still my beating kit kat addiction!) Lots of speed. I got to drive.. the highways in Alberta are fabulous. Can you say 140 km/hr? Saskatchewan less so. I'm amazed that there can be so much FLAT in the world. Very strange to my mountain sensibilities.

So far I've accomplished 2 of my 3 Winnipeg hopes:

1) Have fun in Winnipeg, check out the scene. Have Fun.
2) Not run into this girl I dated who lives here.

The third was run into cult filmmaker Guy Maddin. Which I haven't done yet, though I bought a book about him at the anarchist bookstore (Mondragon).

Oh and the girls are really great. (not that many attractive guys though) Two really cool Quebecois (one a friend of a friend who did the road trip with us) and another I've met at the conference. They're both really cute and into free jazz and stuff. My world has been shaken. (but not stirred) My pathetic weakness for French accents and all things french has become apparent. My friend Sharmeen even noticed my obvious crushes. Thank god neither of them have freckles or I would probably melt on the spot. The french + freckles combination would devastate me faster than going one round with Muhammed Ali.

"I too was a champion, but I don't remember
how
or why.
When people say I'm drunk, I say I'm weaving
like a buttefly.
Just me.
Me and Muhammed Ali"

adjunct:
I can't say for certain where I read this, but: the Cash/YLT tour was not too recent, so most of the people there to see Cash were not part of his late 90's rediscovery among hipsters. People in Georgia threw bottles at them (like the Blues Brothers!), and they were booed off the stage most nights. Apparently the Georgia crowd really got to them, so they played forever, and made lots redneck jokes along the way.

Did they play any other covers? When is the Yo La Tengo covers record coming out? Wouldn't it be amazing?
