I took my profile pic in Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah GA. Lots of really cool funerary monuments there. Sigh, it's a lost art.

As my limited career in anthropology progresses, I have found myself drawn to the various ways people memorialize their dead. This type of monument is especially appealing to me, in the respect of -- this person was so great in life that even the angels mourn their passing -- that to me just seems very powerful and sad.

Yeah, graveyard angels induce a kind of melancholy in me. In elementary school in NJ my school had a graveyard in which students were brought to go sledding during recess.There was one angel (viewable from a classroom window - quite the distraction) near the grave of someone named Sir fracis Bacon, who apparently is NOT the Sir Francis Bacon of English history, that somehow made me especially uneasy, yet I often found myself transfixed, unable to look away. I used to feed a squirrel named Mel while sitting on Sir Francis' grave facing the angel.

Curious... I wonder if that was Sir Francis Bacon the occultist? That might explain your uneasiness around the grave...
