I recently moved to NY from Iceland. I'm working at a very small company and although the few people that work there are all really nice I don't hang out with them after work. They've got their families and are also a bit older than me.

I love my job and it's the reason I moved here but the main drawback besides the few number of people that work there is that I only go to the office two times a week. The other three days I work from home.

Which would be ok maybe if it wasn't for the fact that I really don't know any people here. Add those things together and you get a lot of days where I don't make any physical contact with anyone. Which is really starting to get me down.

On top of this, my girlfriend, who came here with me, went to Paris to study which basically led to our brakeup. She was going to come over for the summer but that's obviously not going to happen.

I have skype and IM and all those things so I can chat with my friends and family back home but it's not really the same thing is it?

It's a funny thing trying to make new friends in this kind of situation. You don't want to stalk people or cling to them but how do you make friends in a rush? And I'm basically in a bit of a rush since I'm getting pretty lonely.

I've known most of my friends back home for ten, fifteen or even twenty five years. I've picked up a few in the last ten years but that's been an organic process. What I'm trying to say is that I haven't had to make any effort to make new friends in a really really long time.

Now I find myself in a situation where I actually have to work at it. And making new friends in a new city is pretty hard and frustrating work.

Anyhow, just wanted to vent my frustrations. If you have any advice or better yet if you live in NY and want to meet over a beer or something I'm up for it.
