"FIRST MOVE" begins with the decaying cadence of a U2 march time kick dance. When Lauren tells you, "I'll make the first move," check your heart and take the nitro if you skip a beat. The rhythm here is an unflinching invitation to the dance in your Buick overlooking the landscape from above your very own neighborhood. "If I dare to fall, will you dare to feel?" Come on, what are you waiting for!? Shake off the macho, and let go. "I feel like we're standing on opposite cliffs and if nobody jumps, somebody is bound to drift away." Suzy Cue will give it up for the asking, but this is a different request. This is the song about falling, shaking and asking for the action that is "easier than breathing." If you don't fall into this valley you'll standing alone on the edge looking back for the rest of your life.

WHEN IT WAS LOVE_After three invitations, Lauren's voice changes character, as she stands watching the risk she took with you turn and walk away. The cello and piano try to match the warmth of her voice, but only sing along as dutiful, sympathetic backing voices. "I knew that I would risk it all. Loving you was worth the fall. But all of that is over now." You know damn well you left her for someone less substantial. Maybe you got Britney to bed, but after letting down that beautiful hair she'll shave it off and you'll be stuck in her trailer with the consequence of your bad decision! Remember when you "made her laugh," and then you "said her name, and made me feel alone." She knows it's over. "Loving you was my mistake." You cheap ass glitter drunk bastard! "It felt right somehow, but that's over now." This song is too sincere to hope for a rebound. Let the girl pull herself together. You aren't the only one waiting in line for her. The title tune, "LAST TIME" begins with a fuzz box bell chime. Oh Jesus, I think she's giving you a last chance. But will you take the opportunity? The wah wah distorted alligator guit box says, no way! "You didn't seem to mind, I'm on this crazy ride for the last time. You're dragging me under for the last time! For the last time!" I laugh at your calamity! Lauren's voice echoes her declaration of freedom and then repeats, "You're dragging me under for the last time. For the last time. You're running me over for the last time! The last time." There's a few lines that might give you hope, and she remembers every tender moment. But you don't have it in you, do you, Baby Blue! "I used to think that everything was fine, but all your excuses turned to lies. I couldn't see your eyes. It doesn't matter what you say, without all your crap I'll be okay." So long, sucker! "The very last time!"

OPEN DOOR_Look I'm dying here, please throw me a bone. "You've taken all your family secrets and locked them up inside. You take the burden to keep us happy and tell us you're alright. I can tell the pain's become too much. Lay it on me, I think you've had enough." This march time song has the feeling of a waltz, and your dance of death repressed feelings are invited to hold close the one who loves you and take your achy aorta to the floor for a slow dance. "I am still here to make you feel alright." Swallow your pride and pack up your troubles, give them all to this beautiful healer. "Don't you give up on what you believe in. Try to hold onto what you've been dreaming." "I will be here to make you feel alive." It isn't clear if this is a love song to a family member or a broken lover. Whoever the intended, a tragedy can be averted if the being alright gives way to feeling the 20 lbs. pain stuffed in that 5 lb. sack in your chest. Hot tip! Take the offer. I've seen a enough white crosses on road to give that little piece of advice. "Don't you give up on what you believe in!"

"BLOW ME AWAY"_"I don't want to be your best friend. I don't want to know you love somebody else." I hear that! There's some cad stringing along the gene pool "like notes to your song, but it sounds all wrong." There is a chorus of doubled voices shouting across the darkness and churlish, cheap separation and playing the barren field. "She's just a novelty. Just some bimbo on the screen. Here I am in front of you. Is there nothing you can do? Say it! Say it! Blow me away!"

All of these songs have in common the willingness to commit to touch the contents of the song. This is the voice that you should sing along to when you drop the lines and go for the timeless. I don't know if I have ever met the like of this clear simple sound spoken to me on any silent night down Moonlight Drive. Perhaps I never will. Hearing this album opens up a door inside that was cracked ajar but never really enough to walk through. The source of this sonic opening bell to the love school sells as well on a poster as on a disk. I truly believe that Lauren is capable of the strong statements she makes in her very own life. If you can stand to chuck the clever cynicism that got you by thus far, there's a world of hurt, and joy, and life that shines through all the notes and words and all that constructed light, and promises your heart won't be too much to bare. Take a chance, Cecil!
