Day 5 – September 19, 2011
The worst you could imagine is never as bad as you fear, and the best you could imagine always disappoints. Remain neutral towards everything, and you will begin to think nothing of occurrences other than “It happened.”

On Epicurus' list of necessities for happiness –
What if someone is unable to obtain one of the elements of happiness? For instance, a socially awkward person who is unable to make friends, or a homeless person who has no way to attain food or shelter. Must they make do with what they can have, or are they simply doomed to unhappiness?

"We have already seen why we should not worry about death, according to Epicurus. If death is a state of non-existence, there is nothing it is like to be dead. Being dead is not painful, boring, sad – or anything else for that matter. Being dead is the same as not being conceived or not existing before your father’s sperm met your mother’s egg. We are never sad about missing the times before we existed. We never think that pre-natal non-existence should trouble us. On "vulgar" hedonism –
"We normally associate this type of hedonism with excess, putting one’s pleasure above everything else, overindulgence and intemperate behavior. We could object to this view on at least three counts.. . because we see certain kinds of behavior as immoral, for example, putting your own pleasure before others." – Havi Carel, Illness pg 103
Why is that kind of behavior immoral? Won’t placing others pleasure before yours cause you pain at times? I can see why it may be considered immoral if say, we were talking about a serial killer, who takes pleasure in murdering people. But for your average person, why is it such a crime to be concerned with yourself before others?
