So I noticed this interesting environmental article in last week's Willamette Week. To summarize:

"A March 2005 study by the Environmental Protection Agency shows most scooters on the road pollute more than SUVs."

Don't trust Bush The Second's EPA? Fair enough... so the WW did their own studies on 3 scooters and an SUV, measuring hydrocarbons (which lead to ground-level ozone, a health hazard) and CO (causes greenhouse effects):

scooters:
1968 Piaggio Gran Turismo-- 4900 parts per million hydrocarbons, 8.6% CO exhaust emissions.

2006 Motofino 150T-10D-- 168 ppm hydrocarbons, 3.1% CO emissions.

2005 Piaggio Stella-- 1100 ppm hydrocarbons, 7.1% CO emissions.

SUV
2006 Subaru Tribeca-- 10 ppm hydrocarbons, 1% CO emissions.

I would've liked to seen more SUVs tested, but this is a gigantic difference anyway, n it makes you wonder.... wonderwonderwonder....

"Neil Young doesn't have the capability to argue the international war on terror."
--Bill O'Reilly, on radio last week, when a show-caller complained the CSNY concert he went to was too political.

"Politicians and their apologists in the media often patronize musicians and other artists. We are supposedly naive and don't understand the cruel and cold realities of the world. Then again, we are not the ones who have provoked or underwritten countless military confrontations and hypocritically promoted global instability through fear, in the guise of defending freedom, justice, and corporate profit. The only difference in those they oppose being a willingness to glory in a relationship with evil that goes undisguised."
-- Elvis Costello, liner notes to the Goodbye, Cruel World 2004 reissue.

---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ----
Been a full couple of weeks since the last update. Have had some good, way-too-short times with friends and lover, some crazy shit like Virus From Hell last Monday (at midnight, no less) and getting locked out of my apartment ($125 locksmith).
I saw Rory Stewart give a book-talk, the guy who I've gushed about in this Journal weeks back due to his incredibly-interesting-sounding book about hiking across Afghanistan in 2001-2002... well, he also served as a diplomat in Iraq in 2003-2004. It was a fascinating evening, one which I maybe should've discussed in here, and maybe still will (from my ever-fading memory), but... I dunno, I have middle-east-conflict-fatigue. What about you all? Probably. Let's uhh not discuss Iraq today.
I went to the Zine Symposium in Portland a couple days this weekend. Great stuff, picked up some artwork n a couple zines. I'll be writing more about that as I read/ digest websites. I can't believe it was FREE to attend. I picked up a neat shirt n poster and was overall excited to be back in the world of zines, which I guess I've mostly neglected since the 1990s days of Factsheet Five.
Lastly, I heard streaming audio of jonnytrrrash7's radio show... at work! Sundays should be more funn in the "office" now.

PS- the page here said I had a private message in my box, but nothing was there. I know this happened to rollerdisco once, too.... so if you messaged me on SG in the last 30 hours, I didn't get it- resend. Sorry.

While I like leaving up band's lyrics as a Journal forever... well, actually, I don't like that. I mean, that LCD Soundsystem song is funn, as are quite a few on their album (songs that slavishly imitate disco, The Fall, and Brian Eno, anyone??), but I wanted to say-

I feel good.

This is a feel-good blog. I just biked around Portland, and what a charming lil grungy town we have.

I saw Lauren K Newman play last night. She really is a crackhead (no skull-fracture jokes, please; yes, this is the woman I helped at the benefit show for, weeks back) with all her spazz, uncontrolled, lesbionic energy. She mostly stuck to hard-ass loud riffs, but broke out some SERIOUS Zappa/ Page leads, and at the end of her set did some John-Bonhamesque drum rolls justforthehellofit. Swallows (who also played the benefit) are a nice lil band, I think. I think I want to see them a third time. New York punkbians Marla Hooch also whooped an ostrich ass with a taser gun. Show felt good.

Went to Brewfest with bankerboy and his associates. Really liked Fearless Scottish Ale, and not just cuz I'm relentlessly Celtic-obsessed. It's like a cross between a stout and lager. Didn't like Full Sail Vesuvius. One word- bananaish. Also, Lucky Lab Anchors Aweigh is dogcrap.
I smoked a Island Delights cherry cigar, too. Don't ask me how I can hatehatehate cig smoke, yet enjoy a sweet, pipe-tobacco-like cigar. All I know is, 1) I can, 2) they do leave your mouth pretty funky the rest of the day, especially if you just had Ethiopian food... so don't light up before you make out. Brewfest felt good. And drunk.

I need for howdypardner to get back in town so we can go to movies! Clerks II, Pirates II and M Night Shyamalan!!! That'd feel good.

And new Bailey set! Mmmmmm. Feels gooood. Baaaailey. wink

Overall, I felt good. In an hour, who knows? But I wanted to uhh have the hubris to put this up. I'm sorry I don't blog like I used to. I used to read tons and tons of interesting facts in book reviews at my library, and be able to update blogs at my library, but while I still catch the New York Times section and New York Reviews of Books online and at local libraries, I seem to read a lot less, see less book reviews, and I also don't get Book TV interviews/ monologues since I don't have cable. I might get cable soon, for that, football, Colbert, and Bourdain.... depends how I feel financially. Oh, speaking of financially, I only have three more student loan payments to make. I"m freakin happy bout that. Getting back to blogging on SG, yeah, mine used to be better.... but I see lots of folks staying away from the site now. The new layout? Lack of novelty of SG in general? Switching to MySpace? Busy during summer months? I dunno. I just figured I'd throw out that 1) I'm noticing the decline in Journals, 2) including my own Journal, 3) I hope it'll bounce back, although maybe we'll all end up on some (sacrilege!) other site in the future that'll take the place of this one... and it'll be uh virtual reality 3D plasma high-def, maaan.

Yeah, I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge.
The kids are coming up from behind.
I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge to the kids from
France
and from London.
but I was there.

I was there
in 1968.
I was there at the first Can show
in Cologne.
I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge
to the kids whose footsteps
I hear
when they get on the decks.
I'm losing my edge
to the Internet seekers
who can tell me
every member
of every good group from 1962
to 1978.
I'm losing my edge.

To all the kids
in Tokyo
and Berlin.
I'm losing my edge to the art-school Brooklynites in little jackets
and borrowed nostalgia
for the unremembered eighties.

But I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge,

but I was there.

I was there.
But I was there.

I'm losing my edge.

I'm losing my edge.

I can hear the footsteps
every night on the decks.
But I was there.
I was there in 1974 at the first Suicide practices
in a loft in New York City.
I was working on the organ sounds
with much patience.
I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band.
I told him,
"Don't do it that way. You'll never make a dime."
I was there.

I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids.
I played it at CBGB's.
Everybody thought I was crazy.
We all know.
I was there.

I was there.

I've never been wrong.

I used to work in the record store.
I had everything before anyone.
I was there
in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan.
I was there
in Jamaica during the great sound clashes.
I woke up naked on the beach
in Ibiza in 1988.

But I'm losing my edge
to better-looking people
with better ideas
and more talent,
and they're actually really, really nice.

I'm losing my edge.

I heard you have a compilation
of every good song ever done by anybody.
Every great song by the Beach Boys.
All the underground hits.
All the Modern Lovers tracks.
I heard you have a vinyl of every Niagra record on German import.
I heard that you have a white label of every seminal Detroit techno hit - 1985, '86, '87.
I heard that you have a CD compilation of every good '60s cut
and another box set from the '70s.

I hear you're buying a synthesizer and an arpeggiator
and are throwing your computer out the window because you want to make something real.
You want to make a Yaz record.

I hear
that you and your band have sold your guitars
and bought turntables.
I hear
that you and your band have sold your turntables
and bought guitars.

I hear everybody that you know is more relevant
than everybody
that I know.

But have you seen my records? This Heat, Pere Ubu, Outsiders, Nation of Ulysses, Mars, The Trojans, The Black Dice, Todd Terry, the Germs, Section 25, Althea and Donna, Sexual Harassment, a-Ha, Pere Ubu, Dorothy Ashby, PIL, the Fania All-Stars, the Bar-Kays, the Human League, the Normal, Lou Reed, Scott Walker, Monks, Niagra, Joy Division, Lower 48, the Association, Sun Ra, Scientists, Royal Trux, 10cc, Eric B. and Rakim, Index, Basic Channel, Soulsonic Force ("just hit me"!), Juan Atkins, David Axelrod, Electric Prunes, Gil Scott Heron!!, the Slits, Faust, Mantronix, Pharaoh Sanders and the Fire Engines, the Swans, the Soft Cell, the Sonics,

Was great funn seeing folks at karaoke last night. Yeah, somehow got a full 3 hours in there, and a few drinks, despite havin to work at 6:30 Sat and Sun mornin... aaaand tomorrow, so I go off to bed now.

I sang "One Way Out" by the Allmans. I'll try to tackle some modern rock at Chopsticks soon, I just knew I could do Gregg's vocal range. I was thinking of eventually doing "Radio Free Europe," ignoring the lyrics monitor and just mumbling ten times as fuddledly as Stipe.

Hmmm, a week of long work hours n great socializing... I really didn't think I'd find any use for these stupid "About Me" boxes (viewed above), but I think I do have a relevant point for mine for the near-future (except *this Tuesday, I'm off to see Ween with mikael and Les). Job is going okay for me; just worrying that the getting-up-hellaearly thing will snap me like a twig... ironically, I've been wide awake at work, but near dead on my feet the rest of the time.... with some exceptions. It's been a high-energy week at times.

Harry n the Potters show on Thurs was nice. I can always use more 7 pm rock shows....

It was Automatic's birthday last night and after some drinks at The Triple Nickel I was definitely game to try the new experience (for me) of Devil's Point. Well, it was pretty damned fun.... I don't really see it as sexual, not to me anyway, but it was a fun hangout, no cover, some cool stage moves. They played lots of good punk rock (The Clash, The Buzzcocks, etc) and I had a nice Guinness and gave a buck to Stormy, who prob earned more but I was not so loaded with cash, mmmkay?
Today, I went outdoors a lot. I went to the farmers market and got some veggies and a basket of marionberries which I just ate (a pint for $1.50). I saw pygmy for a second (wish to see her n hubby more) and met my friend miguelitooooo, who is a pretty great music-biz guy... not in terms of getting rich or being a scenester, but of putting out some real-deal brilliant stuff via compilations in his well-damn-informative magazines and such. I also went to the beautiful Japanese Gardens; I wish you all could see this place someday. It's kinda like the Chinese Gardens in the National Arboretum, but way larger and better (and Japanese)(and surrounded by giant fir trees). They did a demo there of a traditional tea ceremony this afternoon. I also went to Tryon State Park, more giant firs and trees. Lots of bugs, but thankfully they didn't swarm around you, they were just numerous.
I was glad to get some quality time with friends last night and today; lifted my spirits, and all these great outdoor places are a real antidote to the concrete and steel. Now maybe to make dinner and more Ali G-ing. Respek.

I was gonna say others haven't been very active on here... but I think others have been blogging more than me. I've been busy startin at new job. 4 days, long hours on Mon and Tues, and lil stressful since I'm starting out... I'll see how it goes.
If there's an award for keeping a straight face (sort of The Anti-Horatio-Sanz Award) it'd have to go to Sasha Cohen. Been watching Ali G shows on DVD (from Lake Oswego library), and I don't know how he does it while saying that crazy crap to DEA agents, cops, Newt Gingrich, Boutros Bourtos-Ghali... and how does he even get these interviews? One thing that's very telling- all the interviewees sit there and take endless nonsense, except for one. Donald Trump. The Donald has no time to waste!!! Booyah kashan.
No BBQ social tonight, hmm, gonna have to improvise plan of action.

I'm a bit blah today. I got more sleep than I had in at least a week last night, but nonetheless feel absolutely wiped out tonight. Fair enough. I got up early today for new work; will get up farrrr earlier tomorrow.
World Cup settled on penalty kicks = disappointment. It was a good game in some respects but... I kinda was lookin for a diff ending to this thing. It's not just that I was rooting for France; France and Italy were pretty mid-level "favorites" of mine. Would've preferred... well, half the world's teams to them, I guess, but anyway Italy's kinda cool and they won fair/ square. What more can one demand?
Not getting any friend time today... but I got in a lot lately, so time to just accept that today is megaboring, and hey, maybe not go out and spend a crapload yet again. I mean, I'm workin, but not gettin THAT much greenback at it.
I had funn cafe breakfast and kickball time yesterday. We (and by "we" I mean I was in the game for approx. 40 seconds) beat the big, scary professional leaguers with our (and by "our," I mean I've shown up twice) rag-tag group of motleys and freaks.
If this entry seems... a bit dry and forced, you must remember I've been asleep for 5 hours. I think things will... work out good soon, on the upswing, and boy I really don't normally jinx myself so readily.

I had a great 4th, actually. hypnogogic and ladybelmont put on funn parties, especially when things start shooting sparks and blowing up. Got to bottle-feed Possum Pete the kitten, too. Try runnin into the john for a quick leak when you have 3 mewing two-week-old kitties in there giving you their full guilt-trip, and it makes for some long bathroom trips.
Also, London and pdxMatt brought a cute doggie, Oyster. Looks like a grey version of JamieLee's cutie, Chester (who I sadly haven't met yet).

Went to the Lilys/ High Violets/ Human Television show at Doug Fir with mikael and Les. We got pretty darned good, semi-'spensive dinner upstairs first. Their shakes are super creamy... it's like a butter cream ice cream shake... I also wanted to expand my drinkin horizons. Yes, passed on bourbon for some vodka. Decided to try a vodka gimlet. Nice stuff, and pretty potent. I like limes. Mercury describes HT as sounding like Smiths and Wedding Present. Well, that's crap. The Weddoes are hyper and clangy, and The Smiths are... well, like themselves, noone else. Human TV has a nice echoey sound on the singer's Rickenbacker. The High Violets are even more shoegazey, and sound good (singer/guitarist looks like Kikka from a distance, so I just pretended it was her). They use lots of strobelights and fog, so kids- BLAZE UP (or drink vodka gimlets) for a HV show near you. The Lilys, frankly, didn't fluck my mind too much- they were okay- so I mostly texted howdypardner for funn.

I got a job. Hopefully that will pan out well. I am a security officer, or Rental Supercop. Party at phillipetheotter's tonite. I got some VikingFjord potato vodka to celebrate my hire and party-down (ps- the previously-mentioned gimlets were made with Monopolowa. Spud vodddka!!).

I still owe 20-interesting-facts-about-me blog for BernardShakey. I need to like write things down to remember enough stuff to compile these type of deals...
