I refuse to celebrate St Valentine's Day anymore. In a growing list of horrendously commercialized holidays, poor St Valentine's stands out as the one I have the most problem with.

Because it's all about the relationship.

Look, I have no problem with relationships, or being in one, or whatever. It's just that I already have birthdays and anniversaries to worry about, why do I need one more fucking day? And it gets so schlocky and ick.

Yes, I said ick.

I don't know. Maybe it's just a reaction to the vast over-commercialization of our holidays in general. I have nothing against capitalism. I love money. I want more of it. I understand that sometimes you gotta work with the system to do these things. It's just that it seems to make our holidays so much more trite. There's no meaning anymore, except for the fact that I am expected to shell out money to buy some flowers and a nice dinner and maybe some jewelry.

Especially that last one if I'm looking for something extra dirty that night.

Although, it's funny, I can usually get that extra dirty without a fucking holiday and flowers and candy and blah, blah, blah...

And the really sad part is that I still buy into it. I admit it, I love romantic comedies. I love me a good chick flick sometimes. I get cry sometimes at the movies.

But, I also understand that these reactions have become almost Pavlovian. They've been making sappy romantic comedies for way too long to not know how to make somebody tear up.

Whatever, back to my point. I still buy into it. I believe in romance. I believe that there's somebody out there. Somebody who's willing to put up with me and my shit. Somebody who's willing to be tied up or used as a side table or whatever.

And I have no problem buying the flowers and the stuffed animals and the collars and the spanking skirts to show my love and affection.

It just seems a little odd that we're doing all this on a day commemorating the death of a martyr in ancient Rome. It just seems a little disingenuous.

I don't know. I guess I just don't get why we have to have a holiday about "love." And I mean the quotation marks. I don't for one minute believe that Valentine's Day is about love in bold. Or italicized for that matter. Maybe once upon a time it was about love. Maybe once upon a time it wasn't about hocking chalky hearts and bad flower arrangements and furthering global monopolies (read diamonds). But not anymore. And I think that's my big problem with it.

Whatever. As long as they don't fuck with St Andrew's day, I'll be good.
