ene and hit the ball sweetly on the volley past the right side of Wayne Henderson into the bottom right hand corner of the Town End net. Morecambe fans erupted and the Preston defence were left wondering how and why Bentley got his foot to goal. Things went from bad to worse for Preston as the first half carried on. Preston tried to use the same long ball tactic that worked very well when David Nugent was scoring for fun last season. Sadly Preston didnt have the presence up front to pose a danger to the Morecambe goal keeper. Preston's only first half chance when Neil Mellor got his head onto a beautiful cross however he connected weakly with the ball and the Morecambe keeper collected it easily. Morecambe's first half performance was marred when Preston's Darren Carter and Morecambe's McLachan both went in bravely for the ball on the halfway line and connected wickedly with each other. Mclachan was stretchered off and Darren Carter limped for a few minutes. 5 minutes were added after the injury and as soon as the half time whistle went, boo's were ringing out from the Preston terraces and they were right to do so. The second half was slightly better for Preston with the introduction of Chris Sedgewick and Karl Hawley on 66 minutes saw a good attacking spell from Preston however the Preston attackers couldnt get passed the strong Morecambe defence. Finally the spell of attacking for Preston finally paid off on the 73rd minute when Danny Pugh connected with Karl Hawley's sweet cross and headed it right into the Morecambe net.

Preston fans were dreaming of an unlikely winner. However, Preston did what they do best after scoring, they sit back and allowed Morecambe to attack, Morecambe got a free kick in almost the same position as they did when they took the lead. The ball was crossed in the Morecambe player got on the right side of Mawene and put the ball in the Preston net. But, the goal was cancelled out for a pull on Youl Mawene's shirt and Preston lived to survive another day. Until the 84th minute when a cross came in from another set piece and Wayne Henderson jumped to collect however it slipped through his hands and ended up at the feet of Morecambe's Artell who had no trouble in scoring. 3 minutes were added on at the end of 90 but it was to no avail. If Preston had another 90 minutes it was doubtful they would score. The boos rang out at full time and the Morecambe fans and players rightfully celebrated their fantastic victory. The Preston players waddled off the pitch with their heads down.
Preston team
Henderson (6) poor communication with defence , Jones (5) was quiet for most of the game, Mawene (4) looks very slow and allowed Morecambe player too much space, St. Ledger (5) looked tired and out of place, Hill (7) the only player who looked good and should've been handed man of the match, Whaley (6) had some good runs but also some very poor passes (Carroll 87), Nicholls (6) looks like he could do well had an ok game, Carter (5) some very poor touches let him down but was brave to go for the ball in the first half (Sedgwick 66 (5) didnt do anything constructive after he came on), Pugh (5) very weak and was lucky to get man of the match, Mellor (3) a very lazy performance from the ex Liverpool man (Hawley 66 (7) looked bright when he came on and did well with the cross that led to the goal), Ormerod (5) poor performance didnt do much probably because the service was terrible.
Subs Not Used: Lonergan, Lewis Neal.
