Car crashes - I've been there few times in the past, but they've always happened in the crowded city streets, where car drive by slowly and you just have to scratch your head trying to figure out all the bureaucracy required by your insurance policy.
I've always felt for such things the same way I feel about lions, assassins or mortal disease: I'm aware of them and I rationally think they're dangerous, but I'm not really scared of them.
Until few nights ago.
The dude and I were driving back after a BBQ dinner at our friends' place not so far from home, it was late and we were both a bit tired form the long day of work - all that grilled food and a couple of drinks didn't help, honestly. Though I was half asleep against the window, I remember I asked myself if he wasn't going too fast for those small and dark country roads, but at the same time I was like "my kingdom for a bed" and didn't cared much.
Right after a sharp turn, we spotted something in the headlights: maybe a big hare, or a cat... the dude told me he thought it was a small dog. However, instead of going ahead he tried to avoid him - successfully - but he lost control of the car.
It seemed to last forever. I felt the car taking off the road heading to the fields, and then suddenly landing on the water on the bottom of the trench, among the overgrown vegetation.
Later I discovered the trench wasn't that full of water, but when I heard the "splash" and I couldn't see anything, all I was thinking was I didn't want to fucking drown inside that car.
I started screaming, while my boyfriend unfastened my seatbelt and cried me to get out. I literally threw myself out of the door and climbed the bank grabbing the grass planting my knees in the mud. The dude helped me - I was still screaming, I wasn't aware of this.
We decided to leave the car and walk away just in case somebody had seen everything and was calling the police: we weren't drunk at all, but we do had a couple of glasses of wine during the dinner and police usually test you no matter what, when you have a car crash in the night. However, nobody came as the nearer house was so far nobody could have seen or heard anything in the dark - this still gives me goosebumps: what if we were trapped inside, injured?
We called a friend to get home safely. We were exhausted.
When finally I had the chance to rest on the bed, I couldn't even sleep: every time I closed my eyes I kept hearing the sound of the car landing on the water. Again and again.
However, today is another day and I'm lucky enough to be here to enjoy the sun like yesterday and the day before. I've discovered is not something I can take for granted.
But bad seeds don't get erased so easily, that's why I'm still here.
