I think his drums are a bit different. I'm pretty sure they are custom built so that he can control a lot of what his arm used to do with his feet, and a lot of it is still acoustic. I'm not sure how well he would do with a regular kit.
They definitely have certain things that make them easier though. Unless you get really expensive ones, there's not as much sensitivity as with real drums, so even if you hit them poorly or in the wrong spot it can still sound pretty good.
