This isn't "the" cause of the emo suck factor but 2 years ago when Abercrombie and Fitch started handing out thier sampler of emo bands (jet's to brazil and some jade tree bands i think) and cementing it's endorsement by the well dressed frat crowd didn't help.

Of course Saves the Day ripping off Lifetime and people pretending that whiney pop punk is emo kinda ruined it more.

"Emo" hasn't been "emo" in 20 years. Listen to Still Life then listen to The Get Up Kids and you'll see what I'm talking about.

most of you have a jaded perception of what emo is... Emo isn't anyu sappy pop punk band or some dude on an accoustic guitar, or indie rock. Not to sound like an elitist, but Emo is a form of hardcore. Current bands that are emo, check out hot cross, joshua fit for battle, the assistant, Yaphet Koto, Off Minor, pg99, city of caterpillar. Older bands to listen to, You and I, Seatia, Songs of Zarathustra, swing kids, crimson curse, and many more.

You are insane. Cursive have more talent then those three bands combined. Have you payed attention to their music. Brillant and very artistic song writing. Conner from Bright Eyes is of the best lyricist doing what he is doing. Though his never sad story gets old his voice is amazing. Those crappy bands(The promise ring being only okay) can't hold a flame.

stewfnrocker (i hope thats right?)- Those bands aren't emo. pg99 is about as emo as the locust.

As far as emo sucking. I think it was slow dumbing down of the genre. First came the get up kids and saves the day. Then after mtv was finished it was time to put the fork in because its done. If founders of emo knew this is what was going to happen I think they would have quit. you can't even compare bands like fugazi to dashboard confessional.

"emo" is the grunge of this season gap adds. It was a made up genré to sell records to kids that didnt want to rebel with the kids before them . Bands like Sunny Day Realestate , A Minor Forest , Failure . . . all did great things , then thier sound was co-opted and mass marketed and sold to the masses . The term "emo" was made up by record exec's to fill a void after the previous trend started not bringing in the cash . . . the next seattle , the next big scene . . .

That may well be , those bands were simply used as point of reference for a musical style , and played a major part in bringing that musical style to a poular mark . They were not intended to be the thought of as the first "emo" bands . Regardless of semantics I think what I said is still pretty on the mark . I'm not saying that I dont like those bands either , or any of the emo , spock , loctusthaircut , indie , whatever the fuck sub-genré music that is happening in the world today . I like alot of the seattle grunge era bands too , but the "grunge" terminlogy was just a rip off of popular cultre , the same as "emo" .

edit to point out i am aware of my poor spelling , i am a little hungover and not feeling like making corrections . . . smile

I don't know man. I've heard some of those bands and I still don't say they're emo. I know I keep using pg99 but I mean they are closer to grindcore then emo.

this is what happened...

people began labeling everything that was a whiney teenage heartbreak song emo. then when emo made it's crossover into "hardcore", the media didn't know what to call it, so they came up with a silly little tagline known as "screamo"... to many kids mistook weezer (pinkerton is not emo, it's whiney college alternative rock), new found glory, and promise ring for emo bands (yes, that's correct, the promise ring is NOT an emo band), then chris carraba came up with dashboard confessional and quit further seems forever, then emo had it's cute broken-hearted poster boy. now it was ready for post-modern commercial consumption... to see where this happened in the past, view the early 1990's... one band gets a tagline, all the bands that where actually good in the till then underground genre remain forgotten, all the knock off's sell out and get famous. but the first wave is normally the good one.. we're far past the first wave.

i also blame thursday... since they popularized the "we're anything but emo" line to try and pretend like they still have integrity... even though i still like the band.
