In my quest for amusement I ask-- what is the single most unlistenable recording you own?

Before you reply-- I have a couple of qualifiers.

1- It must be something you bought to actually listen to. It's way to easy to dismiss that Billy Rae Cyrus record that your German Cousin Fengewald gave you on your last birthday.

2- No dredging up the past and admitting you were a closet Def Leppard (or Limp Bizkit, or whatever) fan back in the 8th grade or something; the key word here is unlistenable, not embarassing.

I'll give you my own example-- I own (and do not ask why) a CD called "The Chord Catalog" in which the composer figured every permutation of chords, from 2 note to 13 note, on a piano, and plays them. In order. The result sounds like a gigantic mutant version of "chopsticks". The thing is, it's not bad, since it does exactly what it sets out to do, but I sure cannot sit through it without going insane.

So, let's hear it...

"Goddess in the Doorway" by Mick Jagger. I bought it because the 1st track had a bluesy vibe and seemed cool at Virgin. Little did I know.

Ooohh... This is a good topic-
there's been a number of records I've bought in thrift stores that have just been to ridiculus to listen to. One of them is a supposed hyptnotist, who is constantly repeating everything he says to "hyptnotize" you. It has to be one of the most boring things I've ever heard. I also own a record that soley consists of a "letters" bieng read at different speeds so that secratarys can practice there typing skills.
As far as actual albums, The Haters "drops ascending" double 7 inch is great, but it's SOOO repetitive you never get around to putting it on, flipping it over, putting the next one on, then flipping that over.

well, i picked up this current 93 album that seemed as interesting as any they had done up to then. unfortunately i cannot remember the name as it was a few years back and i shelved it as soon as i got through it once. the concept was using crystal harmonics. the sound vibrations given off by various types of crystals while submersed in some sort of fluid (could i be any more vague...sorry) needless to say it was a labor of curiosity that got me through the entire thing once. the songs if ya wanna call them that were just various collections of squelch and feedback. all labled and documented as though it were a medical experiment. ah well cant win em all.

i was going through my mom's record collection when she said i could have what i wanted from it. i found 4 copies of Elton John's "beyond the yellow brick road" or whatever its called. i think i would say that record is the one with the least amount of redeeming qualities.

my most unlistenable record is a kung fu records sampler. i bought it cause it was $3.99 and had a lot of bands i had heard of but not heard. turns out, their claim to a "punk" compilation turns out to be as emo as it can be. i hate it, anyone want it?

Rudimentary Peni's Cacophony. I love it...but I can't listen to it all at once...but I love it...but it hurts! Oh how I want to hear them sing songs about nightgaunts, if only I could build up a tolerance to the GIBBERING INSANITY!

You're kidding, right? Say that you're kidding.

Actually, lots of people have said this to me about their "Pope Adrian" album. I don't get it, but just yesterday someone was complaining about "Pogo Pope". Hmm.

Nightgaunts is forever embedded in my subconcious, as well as American Anglophile and that one that's something like Kappa Alpha [insert another Greek letter that I forget]. I mean its a great album and a totally sweet concept, I just can't listen to it all the way through.

This thread just reminded me that I've never hear Metal Machine Music, so I just downloaded it.

And you know... I kinda like it. I think it's more listenable than my Crass cd.

you're not missing much. it's one hour of pure guitar feedback, and it's not sonic youth, just mr. young at his worst.
