As if high school weren't already hard enough to take, a Pennsylvania school is making it that much harder, by playing Hanson's "MMMBop" over and over till the students cough up $3,000 for Katrina relief. Or till one of them goes berzerk and Columbines the place. Whichever comes first.

In fact, I can think of many, many more annoying songs than "MMMBop," but it's the principle of thing, isn't it?

"Kids have said, 'If I give you a blank check, will you stop this music?' " [Student Council President Meredith] Cox says. "People are just, like, some people give twenties. You say, 'Thank you very much.' They say, 'No, we just want it to end. Even though it's for a good cause, we just want it to end.' It's rather funny."

Yeah, it's always funny till someone loses an eye or till the silicone chips inside their heads switch to overload...

I feel sorry for the kids, and those poor souls who's ears have never been tainted by the likes of such dribble as Hanson...but I feel more strongly for the adults and the parents who allow it to continue. It would be rather easy to sleep at night now, but not later. "Revenge is a dish best served cold" as is said by both Klingon and Tarintino alike. I can't wait to see what happens with this and how the media will blow it up.

so what exactly is the message to the students?

You will be punished if you don't give money?

It seems to me that those two girls are padding scholarship and college applications with the line:

"Raised over $3,000 from fellow students for Huricane Relief."

From what I get from the story, it seems to me that the song started and then the requests for money came in. This isn't a unique way to teach teenagers social responsiblity, it's torture.

seriously, if people don't want to make a donation, that's their fucking business, that's the way the freee market works. This cruel and unusual punishment for a crime that wasn't even commited.

Furthermore, where were all the people forcing empolyees and students to make donations when the tsunami struck southeast asia, where are the folks willing to play YMCA until somebody coughs up the moulah to rebuild Iraq?

I think if I were a student there I'd take a baseball bat to the PA system. I was always tall, even in highschool, and a two foot bat would be all I needed to crush that speaker in. Flimsy metal protective screen or not.

It actually comes from the original French version of Dangerous Liasons. And it sounds so much nastier in its native tongue.
