At his gig Tuesday night in San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown stopped playing during the third song of his set and complained about the poor sound, at which point an audience member jumped on stage and tackled him:

One fan claimed: “This guy in a white top jumps onto the stage from the crowd, rugby tackles Ian Brown to the floor. Everything stops and the band members run to the aid of their leader.”

A witness continued: “So this is where we think, ‘Well that’s the show over, $30 wasted’. Then Ian Brown and co come back on the stage after 15 minutes. The show went on. Even though the sound was poor there was no other fights, Ian stopped the band a couple of times during ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ because of the sound and feedback. Then they were gone.”

Brown was arrested at his hotel after the gig, and taken in for questioning. No charges are reported to have been filed.

Let me say for the record, since I'm the bloke what took the picture of said bastard getting slapped:

Ian Brown in no way instigated the brawl. Somebody tackled him, and then it was just mayhem. The poor guy was just defending himself.

Also, the Great American Music Hall should really think about investing in better sound. Ian had to signal the board about 500 times just to hear himself in the monitor before finally stopping mid-song to complain offstage.

It was a pretty fun show, in spite of all the ruckus.

If someone tackled me I'd beat them senseless. What are these people thinking?

The house sounds great at the GAMH, but onstage it sounds like crap. I've played there a few times and if you're a loud band, you can't hear fuck all. Something about the acoustics just kills the sound onstage.

How?
I mean people get taken in for questioning all the time, and the only thing that separates him from most of the others is he was on stage getting tackled before hand.
the news story is anticlimatic. Wow, some guy got tackled, his band mates come to his rescue, later at his hotel he is taken in for questioning.
He could have been taken in on an unrelated incident..you never know...
and the first thing I thought after reading it was...
Ok and this is news how?

and no I am not blaming Keith, I just wondered.

Ian Brown has released 4 excellent solo records since the roses split. Music of the Spheres in particular is as good as anything he ever did with that knob John Squire. Now there's a bloke who's done nothing worthwhile since.

Ian always gets stressed about sound quality, I think about 50% of the times I've seen him play, he's had a bit of a tizzy and they've stopped playing for a bit, until it gets sorted. He's a bit of a perfectionist, but that doesn't warrant being punched up!

The Roses were being an inspiration to a section of their generation at a time when it is unlikely you were ratassed and pissing your Adidas tracksuit. Assuming the age you have given is correct and that you weren't getting pissed aged 5-10. Their debut album kicks several shades out of most else of it's time and is still a fantastic album.

The Stone Roses were bloody great, but it wasn't because of Ian Brown it was the whole deal.

Everything he's done since I just don't get, It all just sounds like some drunk Manc singing karaoke down the pub to me.

And Ian Brown complaining about sound quality, HA! Has he heard his own voice?

This is so weird because a similar thing happened at The Mod Club in Toronto, about 2 weeks ago.

A fight didn't break out, but Brown stopped the band a couple of times because the sound was so bad, and then told everyone in the crowd to ask for their money back.

He's got bad luck with sound systems, I guess.

Am I the only one who finds it slightly pathetic that Ian Brown is covering I Wanna Be Adored? Especially after all the shit he has talked about John Squire. Irrespective of Squire's mediocre post-Roses output, Ian Brown wouldn't even have a career if it were not for John Squire.

at least ian's still trying to do something inventive! i think squire must've just run out of ideas before the second coming, which was an all-round bag of wank anyway.

It's a bit rich coming from someone who holds the mic in a way that makes it sound like he's singing through a sock but that's part of his vibe so can't really knock it....
