Still, if the social content of punk rock is, in part, a big fucking NO to the shimmery tungsten cage of boredom that appears around us viz corporate transmutation of every border of daily life into some kind of slick product we are free to buy or not to buy, that is the (only) question, then Green Day can't really qualify, now can they? 'Cause try as I may, I just can't find that NO anywhere in what they do, in any serious way. Them things they say are now just part of the stylistic performance of the genre, and tough they seem not to be the astounding creeps one might find in Good Charlotte, they nonetheless share with that band an incapacity to engage at once the two elements that must be present and in drama with each other in a vital genre. Green Day, I am saying: not punk rock, just formalists.
But they're kind of good. I am not saying Green Day sucks. I like them. I like that song "Warning" a lot. Historically apt punk formalism can be a blast, and historically apt disco formalist is good for dancing, and so on. This is not about what band does and doesn't suck. Nor is about calling out poseurs. (By the way, in the case of music, "poseur" is a contraction of "all sonic formalism, no social content.")
agreed. I haven't seen that ad, and I REALLY doubt that they would put themselves out as the "Godfathers" of anything. Unless they were being ironical. In which case, I'd totally buy it.
Regardless, Green Day does, in fact, rock.
i liked green day when i was younger. i think everyone did.
"american idiot" pissed me off because it's that insolent attitude that is making everyone ignore what michael moore has to say now. it's the mentality that all the W haters who only believe hearsay share. it's ridiculous. go out there and get yourself educated in current events. then you can bitch intelligently instead of throwing around vague accusations about the suburbs and SUVs while you eat your big mac.
as for the punk thing? green day did not invent punk and are not entitled to it in any way. you can't just run around whining about america and say that's all it takes to be "punk". check out the dead kennedys for some REAL lyrics. even though they weren't techincally punk.
godfathers of pop punk on the other hand, would make more sense.
except that the descendents already did it.
They ARE the godfathers of "mall punk." That's all they get.
But to each their own, I mean let the kids have their fun. However, don't call me square when I was doing it so much harder at your age. Then again, the generation before me was doing it first and harder.

Godfather is a lame term. That means they'll inherit all of Punk Rock once the Ramones all die?
Yes, in fact. It's quite a big deal. Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool are in fact rubbing their hands together at this very moment, sinisterly trying to decide out how Tommy can be "disappeared" without anyone finding out. I've heard that Tim Armstrong has been hired to work up a timebomb...
I love the old green day. The other day I saw a new GD video on FUSE... from their new album. I almost cried it was so terribly poppy. That is NOT what Green Day sounds like!

They are the Godfathers of MTV Punk...
Spot on, in a sense. A lot of people my age (24/25) got into punk and sought out other stuff because of "Dookie". Godfathers on punk rock no; done a lot for the scene; yes.
huh? godfathers. I saw them back home before anyone outside of berkeley and the gilman heard of them. i think they were better then for obvious reasons, but godfathers of punk? pop/mtv/punk, well ok. i'm not trying discredit them for their accomplishments, but after 39/smooth, kerplunk and dookie i have'nt purchased any of their albums.
But to each their own, I mean let the kids have their fun. However, don't call me square when I was doing it so much harder at your age. Then again, the generation before me was doing it first and harder.
Thank you!
Um.. I dont qualify as the generation before you do I?

Yeah..
Give us our fookin money so we can get sum fookin smack and wreck the fookin 'otel and ya dont like it, bitch at fookin' maclaren the pansy fooker 'e is..!!
The neverending desire on the part of some "punks" to define what punk is makes most punk just totally suck.
Green Day is a much better band than most "punk as fuck" bands. Dookie is a truly great album, they've done a series of great singles, and I really really like American Idiot.
