Unfortunately I'm guessing that not too many people are aware of him and his influence. And that's a shame. But thanks Prudence, I've read a little bit about him now, and I want to learn more.
the scottish musician who spearheaded the "skiffle" music craze of the 1950's that inspired john lennon and paul mccartney died nov 23 near cambridge, england, while on tour. he was 71.
a jazzman who loved american roots music, donegan became an unlikely pop star when "rock island lane," which he recorded while playing banjo with charlie barber's jazz band, exploded in england at tabout the same time that elvis presley's career was taking off in the united states.
"rock island line" reached no. 8 in the united states in 1956. donegan's biggest u.s. success was the novelty song "does your chewing gun lose its flavor" which reached no 5 in 1961.
