Supposedly according to UPN9 news in NYC, Jam Master Jay (or possibly another member of Run DMC) of Run DMC was shot in the head just about an hour ago or so. If it's true that sucks.

Well, they just confirmed that Jam Master Jay died an hour ago from a gunshot wound to the head. He was shot in a studio is Hollis, Queens by another man who also shot someone else in the studio in the leg. That sucks. That really, really sucks.

What Run-D.M.C. did for hip-hop is unexplainable. Not just the music, but the entire culture that encompasses hip-hop. Hip-hop has Run-D.M.C. to thank for being one of the biggest contributors to the sound defined as hip-hop music today. Jam Master Jay will be sorely missed. And what Run-D.M.C. did for music will remain legendary.

As much as I dislike rap and all that, I do have respect for the old school guys. They had a spark and a sense of humor that I don't see or hear anymore.
Run-DMC was kick ass - sucks to see a cool guy go out like that

Its really a tragedy, because they were never down with violence, and tried to set a positive example for people. I never stopped listening to Run DMC, even in my "I'm a punk, I only listen to one shitty genre of music" phase. He will be sorely missed.

so sad.

it's sad to hear of pretty much anyone being killed, but it is especially sad to hear someone who has made a concerted effort to bring rap/hip-hop to a peaceful mindset. someone who held himself and his business in a high regard. who knew he was a role model and acted appropriately.

i got to chill with him at this year's DMC championships. he was one of the most down to earth "superstars" i have ever encountered. his words were always positive and uplifting.. challenging the incoming generation to reach for their dreams and live in peace. everywhere he went he was met with respect and admiration. and he took it all in and let it all go without an air of snobbery or ego.

and talent? *sigh*

what a huge loss.
frown frown frown

He has a little soul, to rock n' roll
Every record that he touches turns to gold
He's well conducted, self-instructed
His styles were plied, heavily constructed
Mechanically inclined, and if you don't mind
We add spice to your life, time after time
And think about times, where he's a long laster
We rock our rhymes for the Jam-Master.

I'm sitting here in shock. RUN-DMC were pioneers. They broke rap from the backstreet to the mainstream.
Public Enemy said it best in Bring the Noise... 'Run DMC was the first to say a DJ could be a band, Stand on it's own feet, get you out your seat.' And the one man band they were talking about was the one and only Jam Master Jay.

Now Peter Piper picked peppers but Run rocked rhymes
Humpty Dumpty fell down that's his hard time
Jack B. Nimble what nimble and he was quick
But Jam Master cut faster Jack's on Jay's dick
Now Little Bo Peep cold lost her sheep
And Rip van Winkle fell the hell asleep
And Alice chillin somewhere in Wonderland
Jack's servin Jill a bucket in his hand
And Jam Master Jay's making out our sound
The turntables might wobble but they don't fall down

Now Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose both did their thing
But Jam Master's gettin loose and D.M.C.'s the king
Cause he's adult entertainer
Child educator
Jam Master Jay king of the crossfader
He's the better of the best best believe he's the baddest
Perfect timin when I'm climbin I'm a rhymin apparatus
Lot of guts
When he cuts
Girls move their butts
His name is Jay hear the play he must be nuts
And on the mix real quick and I'd like to say
He's not Flash but he's fast and his name is Jay

Jay's like King Midas as I was told
Everything that he touched turned to gold
He's the greatest of the greater get it straight
He's great
Playing fame cause his name is known in every state
His name is Jay
To see him play
Will make you say
God damn that DJ made my day
Like the butcher the baker
The candlestick maker
He's a maker a breaker
And a title taker
Like the little old lady who lived in a shoe
If cuts were kids he would be you
Not lyin y'all he's the best I know
And if I lie my nose will grow
Like a little wooden boy named Pinocchio
And you all know how the story go

Tricks are for kids he plays much gigs
He's a big bad wolf and you're the three pigs
He's a big bad wolf in your neighborhood
Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good

We're Run-D.M.C. got a beef to settle
D's not Hansel he's not Gretel
Jay's a winner
Not a beginner
His pockets get fat others get thinner
Jump on Jay like cows jump moons
People chase Jay like dish and spoon
And like all fairy tales end
You'll see Jay again my friend
