MTV will recognize the Cure as their Icon of 2004. The event honoring the Cure will take place later today in Old Billingsgate Market in London.

Rumors have been floating about the internet that Marilyn Manson will be hosting along with performances by AFI and Blink 182 amongst others.

The show will air on MTV in October.

Oh, my dear god. "I don't want to start any blasphemous rumors but I think that God's got a sick sense of humor"... (Yes, I know this is not by the Cure but it sounds so right to say it at a shameful moment like this)

i disagree wholely... blink 182 may not be everyone "cup o' tea", (including me), but they do what they do... and AFI... come on... i don't care what anyone says their most recent release may not sound much like their older stuff, but they are still fantastic... (people change, why can't people in a band?)

i love the new cure album, and don't think Smith has lost his mind... i think he is more open minded than most people who stick to a limited selection of groups based more on imageand genre than talent... then randomly bash just becuase they don't like it...

i am looking forward to it... and Manson hosting? if it's true... fuckin rock

i don't bash smith at all for liking who he likes, doing what he does, whatever. but after being a cure fan for 17 years and then listening to the juvenile crap he's written on the new album, the way ross robinson butchered the production and the mix, and then hearing robert smith say that ross robinson was more important to the future of the band than simon gallup and roger o'donnell...

smith has lost his fucking mind.

I appreciate your viewpoint. And I agree that musicians should be allowed to change and grow.

But AFI, Blink 182 - talent??? Come on. Okay, sure; both bands are more than compentant musicians; they can all play their instruments quite well.

But what neither band CAN seem do is write music with any sense of originality or indiviuality. Neither has shown that they can write a song capable of lasting beyond their small window of relevance. What they ARE is a couple of MTV Lapdog bands who MTV will use to get the kiddies to watch, and make money from this "tribute". Which I happen to find disgusting. But that's just my opinion.

As Far as the new Cure album...I like it. I don't love it, but I enjoyed it. Robert Smith may have lost his mind. Or maybe he's just feeling the pressure of being so strongly in the spotlight again after a many few years (how long was it been since "Wish"...?) But that's none of my business.

And as for Marilyn Manson...I can see that. Any guy that wear make-up, and loves Bowie, HAS to be a Cure fan... smile

Hey MTV: How about, ohhhh, say, the one or two goth bands that have made a living ripping off the Cure? Maybe one of them could perform? No, cuz 14 year old pizzafaces don't know who they are, or don't buy Pepsi, or whatever. But I guess MTV wants to go with the less obvious bands who no one would ever think even heard of the Cure, let alone were influenced by them. BLINK 18-fucking-2!?!?

I didn't put this in the story, but the keyboard player from Bleeding Through (Marta?) is supposadly playing keyboards for AFI when they play "Just Like Heaven".

Hardcore kids are going to eat this up!

i think i remember hearing awhile back that smith was going to be on this last blink 182 disc, but i dunno if it ever happened. that would probably be the only reason that they were picked to play the icon show, because they have "ties." at least 311's not on the bill yet, huh?

Even at it's best, all this would ever have been is people sucking up to the cure. It never would have been anything good. Especially if you take into account the fact that the cure have been pretty lame for a while now.

Oh, come on. This statement is alittle unfair. I am a big fan of AFI and while they may have recently taken a bite of mainstream, they are still one of the most original bands I have heard. They have also had a lasting fan base during thier entire career. You can't group Blink 182 and AFI together. They are in completely different genres, career stages, etc. AFI has only recently appeared on MTV, besides, music is always about "lasting beyond their window of relevence", sometimes, its just about the music right then and there. I mean isn't that what its about anyway? Not how long you'll last but how you feel right now?
