just fucking classic.

Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners

Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
He moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried and sang along and who'd blame them?
Now you're grown, so grown, now I must say more than ever
Go toora loora toora loo rye aye
And we can sing just like our fathers ....

Come on Eileen! Well, I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
With you in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty ......
Ah, come on Eileen!

These people round here wear beaten down eyes
Sunk in smoke dried faces
They're so resigned to what their fate is
But not us, no not us
We are far too young and clever
Go toora loora toora loo rye aye
Eileen, I'll sing this tune forever

Come on, Eileen, taloora aye
Go toora loora toora loo rye aye

Well, I can't honestly say that i'm a big fan of the song but damn what a gimmick they had with those overalls and stuff. Way to cash in on underprivleged culture.

I've often thought I might name my first born son Johnny Ray. It'd be an excellent name and I'd have an automatic lullaby to hum to him. It's just too perfect. smile

that first line "poor old jonny ray"...

you listen to him sing it, and know from there on out the song is going to be great (despite the wickedly abba'ish cheese intro). which by the way, abba, another great band.

I don't know... that song is kind of ruined for me because it's one of the only songs thats not Classical that he likes.

I'm not knocking classical music by any means... it's my dad that sucks wink

Did anyone else take this thread topic as an imperative sentence?

I did. I don't think Eileen's coming back.

Hmm i always sang it as

Come on Eileen! Well, I swear (on my knees)

I dont know what i was thinking, but i was picturing someone on their knees either praying or begging for something, or offering sexual favours.

Hey, I never was that good with lyrics.

Yes!! Searching For The Young Soul Rebels is a great record! Even better is The Bureau's sole LP, sometimes known as Only For Sheep. They were a band made up of mostly ex-Dexy's who mutinied against Kevin Rowland. Still not on CD, but worth the search...awesome....

TheFuckOffKid and DrNecessitor are right on the money.

This band gets too much shit for having ONE big single when they had three - yeah three - good albums. Searching for the Young Soul Rebels was the bomb, all brass and paddy style circa 1980. Celtic Soul Brothers wasn't just ONE FUCKING SONG, and anyway that song was pretty good. And Don't stand Me Down was a weird departure, but - damn - it's good too.

Let's not forget that their version of "Jackie Wilson Said" put Van's original in the shade.
