I fucking hate them. The novelty of getting one extra song that you didn't know you were getting wears off after one listening of the cd and then after that the dead air they use to "hide" them is just fucking annoying. GET ON WITH THE FUCKING CD!!!!!

especially when you are half asleep listening to the cd and it's over and you are falling asleep more then all of the sudden there is more music...some of my cds have freaky secret songs(i.e. TOOL) and they scare the shit outta you.

I like them if the band only waits like.. 10-30 seconds before it starts. however, anything more than 2 minutes makes me mad.

Beck's secret tracks can be the most startling. Odelay and Mellow Gold, most notably. Just noise experiments after about five minutes of silence. Thank you, mp3 playlists!

I think she was referring to hidden tracks, not Tool.

me too. even with the volume low, the sudden noise always makes me jump. they should just be listed as bonus tracks or something.

There was about a 3 year period where I listened to most of my CDs in the car. And I recently found out that a CD I own has a hidden track. I've owned it for about 5 years now. I think I must have only listened to it in the car, so as the last listed track ended, I was putting in a new disc. whatever

I like a few (especially "Was it Likely" off Spacehog's Resident Alien), but most of them just don't do a lot for me. As individual songs they typically don't stand up well.

It's gotta be well done.

Course of Empire has one that 99% of the people who own the album Initiation don't know about.

There's about a 4 or 5 minute stretch of feedback before the last song. Well there's a song buried under the feedback.

Basically, it was recorded out-of-phase, so the only way to hear it is toplay it on a mono device. Or hold your headphone jack at just the right spot...

Hence the conversation going on here
and, yeah, the secret tracks thing is now officially quite stupid. There's all of about 3 hidden tracks that I enjoy, and they're all ruined by a minute or more of silence.
Hiding it in the negative seconds before a track, however....that just rules. Unfortunately, i don't have any of those (that i know of)

Some copies of 'Ash - 1977' have 2 tracks hidden in this way. Pretty cool as there's no way you'd find it unless you started Track 1 and then rewound the track. Brilliant idea and a proper secret too.

i too share disdane for the secret track , sometimes its ok if the song is good (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) but for the most part the songs they choose to hide suck and are of less than B-sides (Gorillaz) . - and i hate especially loathe when its just a bunch of worthless noise, moans and bleeps (Marilyn Manson)

I usually listen to my CD's on my computer, so "secret" tracks are never a secret to me. If the final track is listed as being 10 minutes long, and the "last" song ended after 4 minutes, then you know something else is there.

At least on a computer, it's easier to fast forward on to the "hidden" track.

Thats why records are the best. Nothing is hidden. Except sometimes you get the little message tween the grooves at the end.

It's even worse when the secret song is good, and you have to fast forward through the silence to hear it.
