I was born in the late 70's so i couldn't really participate in the scene then, but i would've loved to have grown up from oh say, 1977-1983. It seems like a lot of really great punk and vinyl/electro influenced music was becoming prominent. . In contrast to everything else that was being played at that time, it must have been absolutely great to discover as a teen.

If I could choose, it would be the 80's HC scene in DC. So many amazing bands and people were around there at that time. That scene pretty much invented HC for the east coast.

We could cross reference this to the least SG thing about me..
Late 40's- early 50's music > any other era

Mind you I am talking about era's not bands etc. but for sheer volume of amazing music, this era leaves the others for me in the dust. I know VERY few will agree with me here, but I really could care less biggrin

I would have to go with the Jazz of 1963-1967

Miles had the Williams/Hancock/Shorter/Carter quintet (Miles Smiles/ Nefertiti!)

Coltrane had his Garrison/Jones/Tyner group (A Love Supreme! Crescent!)

Sam Rivers, Eric Dolphy, Andrew Hill, Bobby Hutchinson and the rest of the Mid-Sixties Blue Note crew were making dynamic and emotional music that ushered in new freedom into Jazz.

I also really like mid-nineties hip hop especially 1993: Diggable Planets "Reachin", De La Soul "Buhloone Mindstate", Tribe's "Midnight Mauraders", Souls of Mischeif "93' to infinity", Grand Puba "Reel to Reel".

absolutely!!! wait a minute- wouldn't '93 be considered early nineties? my favorite era of
Hip-Hop is from the early 90's (and late 80's to a lesser extent). "Fear of a Black Panet" by Public Enemy is my all time favorite album of the 90's. that era of hip hop also brought us A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Del, as well as those that you mentioned.love

but, if i'm gonna start getting into genres, my favorite era for latin music is during the 60's boogaloo and latin soul era, my favorite era for soul is the 60's and 70's, funk- early 70's, rockabilly- duh, country- late 40's 'til early 60's, folk- again, depression era, punk- 70's to early 80's, ska- 60's jamaican ska, etc., etc.,etc. tongue

1955-1966

All of the greatest rockabilly and surf rock was made during this era. compound that with the greatest cars made during that same period, and you've got one hell of a time to grow up in.

I think I have it narrowed down.
I mostly like music from between the years of 1730 to 1988.I like a few things on either side of those years, but I feel those 258 years were the real glory days.

WORD. It's not my favorite music, although I might venture to say that over all moods and tiems of the day and or year, of all my music the old jazz stuff mgiht be the most consistently appropriate. I've always wanted to spend at least a monteh of my life in the 20s-30s. gangters, pinstripes, tommy guns, fedoras, stereotypical Irish cops with funy hats, prohibition, forbidden swing and alcohol. woohoo. Although slightly later old jazz and blues is also good, I wouldn't want to cut out louie armstrong and billie and ella and bing and frank and dean and all that. Still, the culture of the earlier stuff is more impressive than the rat pack's.
-wants a tommy gun and fancy mobster suit, but knows that if he was in the 20's he'd probably just be a jewish immigrant working in the factories, being sad and miserable.

Early 80's to early 90s'. Spanned everything. All my favourite bands really came out of that era, or produced their best work during that era, with the exception of some early punk.

Dear God no, I love me some Etta James. I've always said "At Last" will be my wedding song. But Etta James' music isn't of this era.

The Mid 60's- garage rock, Beatles, Kinks, Stax, Motown

And, the late 70's early 80's post punk new wave scene- Pretenders, Plimpsouls, Talking Heads... garage rock.

early to mid nineties, the acme of hip hop. nas' illmatic, the wu's 36 chambers, common's ressurection, biggie's ready to die, tribe's low end theory...it gets no better

a close second would be the late 30s, the 40s...billie holiday, ella fitzgerland, duke ellington, john coltrane (more associated with the 50s yes, but gimme some leeway), charlie bird parker, etc. love it love it.
