Ooof, this one is tough, but I have to pick the Sex Pistols, although the Ramones were the second concert I saw and I got to meet Joey Ramone. It's just about a tie, but Sid woulda carved my name into his chest... and that's fucking devotion.

Plus, they are so much snottier.

this is a sinister thread to start. if it was ramones '75-'80 id say them, (and i SERIOUSLY am into the ramones so dont get up in my grill for saying this) but they got pretty crappy with some of their stuff in the 80's, esspecially when they started getting political, and when they had that dude with the short hair, ugh. and as far as frontmen too. joey was on MTV's "rock the vote" what the crap is that? and from what i can tel,l mr lydon has kept with his pissed offness in his old age. so the pistols win it.
(imagine a sid style pimple faced sneering emoticon here)

I look a lot like Sid if I sneer and spike my hair. I have a picture of me someplace where I'm doing that.

The Pistols were a pretty decent band, and popularized punk rock*, but they wouldn't have existed without the Ramones. Besides which, the Ramones have dozens of great songs to compare to the Pistols one record.

Lydon's later career does eclipse the solo work and side projects of all the Ramones combined, though.

*Whether or not this is a good thing is an entirely different debate.

yeah, but at 44, rick is first generation punk rock, while you and i are second, so that means- hell i dunno what that means...what was i talking about again? wait a minute- what? what year is this? no, YOU shut up!

it is true that the sex pistols were snottier, not to mention better looking in their hey-day (john lydon as a young, cockney shit-head is enough to make me swoon, while joey ramone, well...).

the problem with england (oh, i'm sure to get my ass kicked now...) is that they'll often take something that was originally ours, change it completely, then take all the credit for it. punk rock is a perfect example of that.

I don't get questions like this. It must be the pigeonhole generation. It's like asking a band what their influences are. "uh, just about everything I ever heard, dumbass"

hear all music and keep what you like

Easy The Ramones hands down.
Did anyone go to Joeys 50th birthday bash I did and it was amazing. While the Sex Pistols reunion tour (96-97ish i think) was good but not something burned into my memory forever like the birthday bash.

And to answer the question midway down the first page of this thread....it was The Who that invented punk.
