Alright.... I've actually thought about this for a long time, but I've never heard anybody else say it.

Is it just me or are there a lot of religious undertones throughout OK Computer? I mean there are a couple examples that I'm hoping other people have noticed too.

I've only heard Thom Yorke talk about the albums theme as a commentary on the effects oof technology integrating into society and stuff like that... which could add a whole new meaning to the fact that there are underlying religious tones.

I am all the day with my overanalysis up... I am the only one?

Discuss please.

I think there is. Of course Thom Yorke's lyrics is for each individual's own "interpretation". wink

I remember Billy Corgan bing asked about the meaning behind a lot of the songs on "Mellon Collie" and he replied that it didn't matter what he wrote it about. All that matters is what it means for the people who listened to it. One of my favorite quotes ever.

I was just wondering if anybody else read into it the way I did.

yah, for a long time I've felt that OK Computer was very anti-technological age. And, I have read lots of Sci-Fi with that same theme that were religious works.

so I guess it's all possible.

Interesting given the technological slant their music has taking since then. Even more intersting when you consider that "Kid A" is supposed to be themed around the first human clone. So what's Thomes stance on the overabundance of technology these days?

i'm too lazy to look for it right now, but some dude wrote a whole essay concerning the parallels between OK Computer and 1984, going so far as to point out specific lyrics and passages from the book.

when i read it, my first thought was, "well, duh!"

they are from England and i believe somewhat leftist, so how could they not mention religion.... i don't think they are espousing a specific religious view. I like it... makes ya think... sorta like "fuck the system" more poetically.

there are some vaguely religious undertones..."i am born again"..."god loves his children"...but i think the message is that god is actually an alien and will shortly be calling Thom back home after the requisite amounts of goodness have been achieved on earth.

I agree, best concert I've been to. Beta band and Kid Koala were great too.

That's actually sort of what I thought too. I mean listen that's pretty much "Subteranean Homesick Alien" in a nutshell.

i jumped in the river and what did I see?
black-eyed angels swimming with me
a moon full of stars and astral cars
all the figures i used to see
all my lovers were there with me
all my past and futures
and we all went to heaven in a little row boat

there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

blantently religious themes. note the black-eyed angels.

just wanted to add that i saw their homecoming gig in south park, oxford and i doubt any show will top that. ever. talk about a religious experience!

Fuck it, If you got some Can or Neu! lying around...you don't need Radiohead. Music doesn't matter anyway. Who cares about music? Why? What do we get out of it? Getting into new bands/artists is like conquering little islands. It's like megalomania. You have to keep island jumping until they slam the casket lid home. Seems like a waste of time to me. Put some fucking thorozine in my neck and put me in a closet away from everyone else until I'm critical and then toss me in a pine box in a ditch behind Steak & Shake. No music, though.
