hmmm...define 'underground'

i love the Akrobatics
and K-Otix
and Dilated Peoples
and The Coup
and Blackalicious (i don't think that's underground, but i really wouldn't have any idea! i don't listen to any mainstream hip-hop stations, if you know what i'm sayin')

the list goes on and on...

edit: how could i forget jurassic 5 and the black eyed peas (even though they're in a dr. pepper commercial)?

i like it all. 'm currently playing aseop rock a lot, hrmm,,,peanut butter wolf, freestyle fellowship, binary star, juice, cannibal ox, mf doom, most of the hieroglyphics artists, kardinal official, slum villiage, lootpack, people under the stairs .... plus the ones you guys listed plus all the ones i can't type because i'd be here all night,

although, i don't really ever know how to define 'underground' ...or maybe i just don't have a definition for my taste in hip hop, because talib kweli, mos def, even artists like outkast and slum are getting play on mtv and the radio but i think they are quality. underground to me doesn't necessarily mean unknown in the commercial world.

see, now- there's a lot of stuff that inez listed that i like, too, but i didn't list b/c i'm not exactly sure what it means to be 'underground' in hip-hop (in addition to the time and space i would need to list them all!). the entire genre of rap, in general, is pretty much 'underground' in the world of music- the stuff that gets played on MTV is such a tiny, TINY piece of it.

Old School and New School

Black Star, Slum Village, The Coup, Organized Konfusion, Del , Common, The Roots, Hieroglyphics(gotta represent Oakland), Black Eyed Peas, Mystic, KRS-One, Jeru the Damaja, Dilated Peoples, Guidance, Celestial, Afterlife. Just to name a few. smile
The definition of underground: Anything that doesn't require you to wear a brain diaper. Its unfortunate that most people think that whole bling bling thing is all hiphop has to offer. Its very similar to the 80's heavy metal hair bands and they're long gone.

I'm not much for hip-hop as a whole, but I rock some on occasion. Lately I've been into Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, and Dalek (Find the new cd! www.Ipecac.com).

you up on k-otix, ma? I hear that! *dap*

how did I miss this thread...

I'm into some strictly NY cats like pumpkin head, the plague, hydra, soundstorm, amir said, eclectic regiment, and end of the weak (EOW). recently got put on to these two white kids called junk science...lemme just call it now...they will be the next beastie boys.

I also love hi-tek, mos def, talib and thems...I still consider them underground, even mos...I think underground is more about the subject matter and who you're trying to reach than sales or notoriety. like nas' new "lost tapes" LP is underground to me.

I'm also feelin little brother, k-otix as mentioned, pharaoh monch, afu-ra, j5 (thank you bdp!)...feel like I'm forgetting mad heads. but that about covers it. oh and 50 cent...he about to be large as I don't know what now that em got him but hes sick as hell.

dalek. Their new LP "from filthy tongue of gods and griots" is exhilarating and disturbing! Check it out, on Ipecac Recordings. Perfect underground hip-hop for the autumnal season.
