I can't decide. Much like the debate of who is worse, U2 or The Eagles, who is better, the Velvet Underground or Television?

sorry, i just started listening to Television again, all their albums, live shit. So I'm on a Television bender. Perhaps it wasn't as well thought out as my eagle/U2 query.

Yeah, I'm going to have to go with Velvet Underground. Marquee Moon may be an absolute classic, but it can't compete with what the VU put out.

Actually, since the Velvets are LIGHTYEARS better than Television, and the Eagles are LIGHTYEARS worse than any band on Earth, much less U2, I'd say this thread is equally well thought out.

I dunno, there was a lot of anti U2 sentiment.

in plain english your credibility is tenuous at best and you tend to behave like a dick.

And you behave like a saint. Look, just because you're all butt-hurt over my opinion on wonderful bands like Pussy Galore doesn't mean you have to turn this thread into your own little platform for whining. I had some other little weasel a few days ago look through my profile to gather up ammo to make cheap shots like the one you just did with Hanoi Rocks. It's childish, pathetic, predictable and it doesn't prove a thing except that you're made of glass. I won't waste any more time on this thread arguing with a baby since this thread isn't about anything other than the Velvets and Television. If you would like to continue this pointless little shoving match then do it on my journal since you seem to be so fond of looking at my profile.

Have a nice day.

So is there anyone out there willing to take the plunge and defend Television as superior to the Velvets?

I definitely listen to Marquee Moon more than anything from the Velvets, but if I take a hard-line stance, VU & Nico is the more "important" album.

i don't really think they're comparable. if at all comparable, then only for the patchiness of the quality of the frontperson's solo careers.

i do prefer 'marquee moon' to any velvets album, HOWEVER, that was their one great album, 'adventure' being a little vacuous and all...

i think the velvets were more consistent, but for me, there isn't an album of theirs where i like every single song. . . which i do with 'marquee moon'

Television was an art group, a lot of what they did is noodling that was influenced by Patti Smith... VU has a much better rep, I can listen to Maqree Moon & Adventure, but beyond that...

As for VU... they have constant output, John Cale produced the frist Stooges album, and Reed's solo carreer (though hit and miss has some great songs).

I do love me somee "See no............Evil!!!!" -Television. <---

I'd have to agree with this (I seem to agree with this guy fairly often...he might wanna have his head examined wink ). I enjoy listening to Television much more but I'd have to admit the Velvets were more influential.

well, there's ALSO the self-titled reunion one from the early nineties which you can basically discredit on it being pretty lousy (much like most of tom verlaine's solo work), but they also put out a live album that's plain brilliant, with some of the versions of the marquee moon songs actually sounding BETTER live.
