I attended a Hank Rollins spoken word performance immediately after Joe Strummer died. He spent a good 45 min recalling the both of them. By the end, I felt of course saddened by the loss of these amazing people but w/ Strummer, you had sense of him and what he was like. With Layne, most of his friends felt they'd seen this coming and had been cut off by him some time before. My memory of him will always be in a smoking jacket on Headbanger's Ball.
I am not an Alice in Chains fan but a BIG fan of the grotesque.
I "read" somewhere that his label had paid to have some of his front teeth replaced after drugs had destroyed them, leaving him unable to sing properly. That's one good response to someone's drug addiction; please get some help so you can make us more money.
I just think there's something to be said about a dead man whose own family couldn't ID because he had been rotting for so long...while I know FULL well about living with addicts, still did nobody care about this guy?
Sad.

Wow, Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley died on the same day? Spooky.
I remember they announced it like right when Jerry Cantrell and Candlebox was playing a show in Miami, it was weird, but he did the show anyway. I don't think he even mentioned Layne the whole set.
yeah, most people who knew layne were basically waiting to hear the news... there would be a sighting occassionally, like layne buying a new video game at toys r us or whatever... but he wouldn't really talk to anyone...
bummer... a true talent, one of the best live vocalists i've ever witnessed.
Same here Agent_de_Surreal, that band was one of my favorites. I even saved my old shirts I used to have, they are pretty wore down, but nice memories.
I have loved AIC for quite some time. Back when I was 13-14ish "Jar of Flies" was running on my headphones 24 hours a day. But I always underappreciated Layne. I liked Jerry's voice so much that I used to always say "AIC could be fine without Layne, let Jerry sing everything, who needs that fucker?"
and then "Boggy Depot" came out. and it was a big stinker.
suddenly I appreciated Layne so much more. Especially those songs where Jerry and Layne both sing (like the acoustic version of "down in a hole"). the harmonies are beautiful and haunting. RIP Layne.
I didn't even realize that it had been two years for Layne until they said something on the radio, a little side note because everything's KURT today. Hence my purging of the radio for 24 hours. I thought that his anniversary was at least two weeks away.
I rolled my eyes at the little Cobain tributes they're doing on the radio, but they mentioned Layne and I got all depressed and cried. Hmm.

No disrespect to the dead, but Alice In Chains totally sucked.
No disrespect to you, but you are an idiot for saying that!! If you didn't like them cool , But to say they sucked is totally ignorant. Everyone has there own thing, and to judge someone else for liking A.I.C. is pretty stupid. If you dont like them cool . I'm sure you like some music that i think sucks, but i would never tell you that , because we all have different taste.
Peace
