Anyone check this music player out yet? I just got my invite for it, and so far, it seems great. Huge selection. Unlike Pandora, you can choose specific songs to listen to, and even save them to a playlist that you can go back to.

The only thing that im disappointed about so far though is that you cant play it on your phone/ipod/mobile device unless you pay for the subscription blackeyed

But thats a minor gripe i suppose

A minor gripe indeed! Pretend it's Netflix, charging you a subscription for streaming, only in Spotify's case, they don't charge you if you're at home, or the office, or on a laptop...

Keep in mind that what you're complaining about is lacking the ability to play most released music, anywhere you want, without paying for any of it, legally.

And yes, I have it, and my favorite thing about it actually isn't the substantial selection (which does contain some glaring omissions), it's the sharing of playlists. If you connect it to Facebook, you can see your friends' playlists, and subscribe to them, and you can see public playlists that they've subscribed to, so you can subscribe to those, too. And if they're marked as open, you can contribute to them, so you can have a profoundly social listening experience.

It's pretty cool.

Yea, i know. i wasnt really trying to come off as complaining. Just disappointed, because i have very little money, and i stream music at work a lot, on my phone. I can still use Pandora for that. I just wish i had the option to use Spotify, for free, also. Even if it meant they played more ads, or had ads on the screen, or whatever.

Yes, i love this feature. As I've played around in Spotify more and more tonight, this is one of the things that most impressed me.

I also like how it integrates your itunes library, so you can also play that from the same program

I haven't tried it but was wanting to. Sounds pretty cool but don't know too much about it. Sounds totally worth it though.

You should! It's pretty great. You have to sign up on their site and ask for an invite, but I got my invite in about an hour, so it shouldn't take too long

I've got it and love it! I love the tip about sharing playlists (by "bean") and have yet to make a substantial one worth sharing. We first made a playlist that was very similar to our favorite radio station, then discovered exactly WHAT we can find on Spotify! I can't believe the amount of rare albums it contains. I just wish my friends were more in to it so we can share playlists. Totally looking forward to pay that $5 a month to get it on my iPhone.

How about those commercials? (for those of you not paying per month) If they're going to play actual clips of other artists songs in them, you'd think it would be more to the genre that you're listening to so you'd actually be interested enough in the rising artist or new album to check them out?

I have a premium subscription, and I think it's one of the most amazing products to hit the music industry. I think it's the way forward. While you're only paying £9.99 a month, it's GUARANTEED ... i.e.: I might buy one album and then not buy any more for another year ... but with Spotify, it's like they're getting the price of one album per month from every person. Might not seem like much, but with enough subscribers, it's a good solid incoming amount of cash.

I love it and while I still like to buy CD's because I like the covers, it lets me sample and listen to new music on a regular basis.... then perhaps buy tickets to gigs and merch off the back of that.

I'm a Virgin Media customer and next month or so I believe they're giving their customers ... and I quote "a substantially lower price than Spotify charge" smile So I'm looking forward to that smile

Just trying it out, not sure I love it yet. The selection is pretty huge, but has some odd gaps.

One question, is there a way to play it like Pandora? Like, instead of making a playlist, can you select some preferences and let Spotify play a list from those preferences? Artist Radio comes close, but it seems to play the selected artist over and over (with some others thrown in too).

Had an invite to Spotify from way back and thought i'd give it a whirl. Ended up getting redirected to a page saying to log in through Facebook. WTF? Never had an account there, and don't plan to. I'm wondering how many potential new subscribers they're missing out on with this.

Back to Usenet it shall be.

It sounds great, and I don't mind logging in with Facebook, but is there anyway to not post what you're listening to in your FB feed? Because I have no interest in doing that.

Yeah, there's a setting in the main menu for private browsing, which turns off sharing it to facebook.

You don't have to log in through Facebook. There's a Facebook app for Spotify, and there's the Spotify app, which is separate, but the standalone app is connected to Facebook if you set up Facebook connect with it. But FB connect is optional with the standalone app.

It's alright. Good when I only want to listen to one song, but I usually listen to full albums anyway so I just use iTunes.

I don't know. I think that's a little misleading. The graphic is comparing sales (which happen once per person, on a small scale) to plays (which happen many times per person, on a much larger scale). On top of that, in many cases, one play can count for both Spotify and Last.fm, so getting 4 million Spotify plays would probably give an artist a good chunk of Last.fm plays on top of that.

It's an interesting graphic, for sure, because I'm a huge data junkie, but it would be more interesting if it included the average number an average artist can expect to get for each of those distribution methods. Like, how much less likely is it for an artist to get 4 million monthly Spotify plays than 12,000 iTunes track downloads?

It gets more interesting and more complex if you bring in marketing investment.

sell it out of the trunk of your car and earn 100%, or go with a major group and earn much much less of the entire yield.
