If you listen to:

A. Modest Mouse

B. The White Stripes

C. Interpol

Please listen to:

A. The Talking Heads

B. The Buzzcocks

C. Echo & The Bunnymen

Also.

Because the first list of bands are imitating the second. I am not positive about the Interpol connection but it was my first impression of them. Also, I enjoy all of the above listed bands...but was very pissed when the White Stripes first got recognized for "fell in love with a girl" and Jack's voice sounds exactly like Pete Shelley's on "orgasm addict". By the time The White Stripes came out with "Elephant" I was over it and bought the CD because it is damn good and they had somewhat gotten over copying the Buzzcocks (but not the 80's).

Adios. Gracias.

yup. yup. The DD sountrack rocks! As did the "Grosse Pointe Blank" soundtrack. I never even liked "Mirror in the bathroom" until watching that movie.

Edited to include: I don't mean to sabotage my own thread but FUCK is John Cusack freaking hot in that movie or what?! I didn't much recognize his good looks until this flick. Hot Damn!

Now back to the fury...

I read this interview with Issac Brock where he was talking about how much he loves the Pixies and he even went so far as to call Doolittle a "perfect album". At first it wasn't apparent but upon subsequent listens to MM records I could definitely hear the influence. Also I think Interpol borrows heavily from Joy Division, to which I say so what, that's a good thing.

I was saddened by White Striped fans that didn't know that "Stop Breakin Down" was a Stones song and "One more cup of Coffee" was a Dylan song. So there's more history that really shouldn't be obscure.

i like every band on the list as well. but music has that whole creative influence problem. i like hearing an older bands influence in newer stuff. its not whos copying who or anything its just what you like comes out in your music. shit i wrote a song last year and it could have been on any bob dylan album. you think i did that on purpose? of course there is a line to cross and then your a glorified cover band and that happens all the time. i just dont think that list has any of those bands.

If u believe in collective consciousness, as I do, then all music is a result of shared ideas. No copying.

If u don't believe in it...well then New Order or Joy Division = Interpol

I was saddened by your research skills. tongue

(edited to be helpful instead of just snarky. Robert Johnson wrote and recorded the song as "Stop Breakin' Down Blues" and it can be found on King of the Delta Blues, and The Complete Recordings.)
