i am an utter technology and music dork. can someone recommend a good software for ripping a CD to mp3, windows media, and real audio format? i would prefer freeware or shareware (meaning:cheap).

As far as I know, only WMP rips to WMA, and only Real rips to RM. But why would you want either of those with their icky platform tie-ins?

CDex and Exact Audio Copy are free and highly recommended for MP3 encoding.

i'm going to say CDex over EAC, i've used CDex and it's just simply a joy to use comparitively to EAC... a lot of people have switched from EAC to CDex as well... but try both and see which one you like.

I rip all the time, what with hd space these days, its easier than having to go hunt down a cd I have no clue as to it's wherabouts

db poweramp turn out to be just the trick! excellent, well thought out freewear for idiots, but it looks like it could be very utilitarian for some who has a brain.

thanks, bobby.

i'm ripping for posting on a web site that will be visited by business users that aren't likely to have updated players with mp3 codecs. but thank you for the suggestions--i ended up with db poweramp, though.

Anyone who can play Real or WMA will be able to play MP3, I'm quite certain.

I agree, music match is the only ripper I've been able to get to work on software loaded copy protected discs

Free Rip encodes to mp3, ogg, and vqf. These are the only formats I've ever trusted to any of my music. Plus, Free Rip gets around nearly all copy protection ever (by nearly all I mean that I haven't found a CD that Free Rip hasn't been able to rip).
