ive read rave reviews of that crazy bastard mr.wilson's recent live performance of smile in it's entirety....now theres a report the albumn may finally be completed and released...sound good to me...any other smile fanatics around?im trying to find a bootleg of the live gig but im having a hard time...any help wopuld be appreciated.
Yeah, I heard some great stuff from the gigs he's gonna play over here. I read in Mojo Magazine that there are no definate plans for an album release, but they were in discussion with Capitol Records. Apparently Wilson called up Van Dyke Parks after 30 odd years and told him it was time to finish the album. Imagine being on the end of the phone call *drools*

Weren't "Surf's Up" and "Til I Die" originally slated to be on "Smile"?
"Surf's Up" being one of the greatest songs ever...
I'll second that.
I read this on a different web site allegedly from a source "in the know" as they put it. As much as don't care for Mike Love and I do care for the Wondermints, it just doesn't seem right if this is true:
"The intention is to keep SMiLE in Brian's hands untouchable by BRI [company owned jointly by Brian, Mike, Al, & Estate Of Carl](who will have NO PART in the releases)and/or other entities...After all it's noted that Brian stripped "Good Vibrations" of Mike Love's "Lyrics" replacing them with Tony Asher's originals. And that when the studio version of SMiLE comes out later this year the only Beach Boys you'll hear on it are the Wilson Brothers. Mike and Al's vocals having been re-cut by the Wondermints... When you hear the finished version you won't be hearing Mike sing 'Over and over the crow cries ...' SMiLE, at one point the name "The Wilson Brothers SMiLE" was seriously kicked around(there's a mixdown that carries this name on it actually) but eventually Brian Wilson Presents won out."
Years ago, you could buy a computer program with the original DAT recordings, and the schematics to mix the complete SMILE album, the way Wilson had repoerted intended. A friend of mine did it, although it took him over a year (!), I never got to hear it.
First, the Beatles "Naked" version of "Let It Be", and now this...it's crazy...I wonder if it will up to the hype...
Not really left overs per se as it does have some of the songs from Smile, but not the best ones like Surf's Up, Wonderful, or Cabinessence, though I think Heroes and Villains is on it. I don't think Brian really had much to do with it's release and wasn't anywhere near what he intended Smile to be.
Anyone interested in the Smile story, the Beach Boys and Brain Wilson should check out Domenic Priore's book, Look Listen Vibrate Smile. Tons of essays, reviews and rare articles. A really fascinating read.
