yayaya, this board has been done before, but I know there are some serious sg heads out there, so lets hear it one more time! what are your favorite underground hip-hop albums and why (by adding the "why" it technically makes this thread different)
heres mine, in no particular order:

1)Digable Planets-"Blowout Comb" cause digable is just jazzy cool like that. and plenty of finger snaps.
2)DJ Shadow "Entroducing" not so underground anyone, but have to mention it.
3)Jedi Mind Tricks "Violent By Design" still love angry hiphop, makes me want to break things, for political reasons of course.
4)The Coup "Steal This Double Album" see above. makes dead prez look like a bunchy of capitalistic money loving pansies.
5)The Pharcyde "Bizzare Ride" "passin me" by and "otha fish" are two of my alltime favs. one of the few hiphop artists who tackle rejection and unrequited love.
6)Dr.Ocatagon- "Dr. Ocatagonocologyst" because Kool Keith's nefarious time travelling surgeon and proprietor of a porno hospital, who pretends to be a gynaecologist so he can molest his patients, potentially extraterrestrial alter ego will always be his best.
7) Lovage- "Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By"- Automator,Kid Koala, Mike Patton from Fantomas, Jennifer Charles. this is weird wonderful stuff.
8)RJD2-"Dead Ringer"- Entroducing lite. just kidding, its good.
9)Science Fiction-"Walls Don't Exist" cannot be described. same sample based instrumental hiphop as rjd2 and shadow, but so very different.
10)Madlib-"Shades Of Blue" everything thats right about hiphop today.
11)PeanutButter Wolf & Charizma- "Big Shots" i'm a sucker for old school breaks.
12)Roots Manuva-"Dub Come Save Me" i'm totally hooked on electro-dub UK hip-hop.
i forgot about del and the heiro crew

theres me, now you

I will always be a Digable fan. I listen to their albums all the time. Too bad all that wack acid jazz scene stuff screwed it up for them......

Pharcyde......YES! I saw them way back in the day.

Jurassic 5 are my new faves carrying the torch.

digable and Tribe Called Quest nearly took hip-hop in an entirely different direction, instead of just being influenced by jazz into actually becomming jazz (like herbie hancocks headhunters eventually being accepted as legit jazz) unfortunantley that fell through. its comming back though!! check out madlib-shades of blue

Blue Flowers... OH, how many good memories do I have of that song being played while smoking a bowl!
Not too many, actually, two, but I know my friends who were more dedicated than I to the ganja played it nearly every time. biggrin

i think anyone who considers themselves self-respecting human being should have at least one blue flowers+weed memory. i have mine, it involved the blue bird cafe in amsterdam, and enlgish dude named nick and a conversation about the merits of being a "geezer"

I enjoy the beats and rhymes of:
Aesop Rock, Spearhead, Buck 65 (Ok, he's not indie anymore, but still...), and Deltron

Lovage is great, but it's not exactly hip-hop in spite of Dan the Automator. I'm classifying that as Mike Patton project.

I can't get enough Awol One!

6 feet deep might be the greatest slept-on hip-hop album ever. it's pure masterpiece.
In addition to Aesop Rock, Murs, etc., I add Cannibal Ox. I think i'll put him on right now.

any madlib-related project is drooled on by me. he's a genius that truly marches to his own drum...

particularly Quasimoto. the Unseen is one of my favorite records of all time.
