Ok. Who loves Tenacious D besides me and kg?

Seriously, do you love the D or hate the D?

Favorite/Least Favorite songs?

These guys just crack me up, but some of my friends hate them. Number 1 reason cited: they're like a bad potty joke that was taken way way way too far.

Well, since you asked, I hate the D. And Jack Black. I just flat-out don't think he or they are funny.

I think TD is great and I love their album. I play it all the time and sing every friggin' word. It's not really all that much of a comedy album as much as a tongue in cheek tribute (IMHO).

Last week, Kyle quit the band,
Now we're back together, uh.
Misunderstanding, didn't understand.
It doesn't matter, now we're back together again.
A-la la la la la.
Couldn't split up Kato and Nash. (that's true)
Couldn't split up Tango and Cash.
This is our song of exultant joy because
We own the game that kicks some ass.
Rock the fuckin' house and kick some ass.
What we gonna doOoOOo with all the cash?
Smoke hash, and then we thrash.
We'll throw a big ol' bash y'all.
And everyone is invited to the bash.
And everyone you're all invited to the bash!

goodness gracious i love the d. i'm probably going to catch trainwreck tonight. trainwreck is fronted by tenacious d webmaster/fanboy extrodinaire lee and kg.

My boyfriend runs what was the first TD fansite on the interweb (sidehatch.com) and is good friends with them. Apparently "Lee" is partially based on him. Which makes me wonder...

For me myself? I don't care either way, heh.

The D has totally turned me onto Satan, Clog Dancing, and Spinal Piercing.

I love The D because they're the spawn of Bob and David. Yeah, they produced the show.

You can only really appreciate the album after you've seen the show. I can see why most people think the album sucks. I'm surprised they put Bob and David out on DVD before The D.

I know it's not a popular sentiment on these boards, but I HATE, HATE, HATE the D mad mad mad
and you can tell em I said so mad

they're just a slightly better joke than Weird Al, but not by much. same thing with dead milkmem, king missle, they might be giants. clever at first. embarrasing later.

music+comedy just has no sustenance. how many times can you listen to it before it just becomes innane and repetitive? are you still listening to adam sandler songs over and over? i'd much prefer to listen to music that's not supposed to be funny, like whitesnake or kajagoogoo. that's comedy smile

frown I actually LIKED the music aspect of the album. I bought it on a whim and loved the gutair work and Jacks vocals. It didn't sound overproduced to me, and just like any cherished music abulm I like repeting the songs. But mabye im just dumb.

Love the D, and didn't understand why noone else remembers or liked the thing they had on tv all those yeras ago after Mr. Show. I'd prefer to see JAck have just become the D obsessed freak he wanted to be when they started thing immediately and just go all rock star BEFORE he got to be known as a character actor, I was listenign to the D once, and this dumb kid was tlakign to me about it and he was like "that's the band with that dude from Shallow Hal! I barfed on his face. no, I didn't. Anyway, I couldn't deal when I saw wonderboy on TRL, I had to wonder how many volts of electricity htey were shooiting through those teenage girls to sream and cheer after that video was done. They were probabl just hypnotized by the pop gas that carson daily produces out of his hairdo. surreal
-long live the D,

If the music is catchy, it doesn't matter what the content is. I think a lot of people like some of the above bands for their music. They Might Be Giants is one of them. Some S.O.D. is like that. Some Monty Python is like that (and their music is really quite nice). I haven't heard enough of TD to say one way or another about them, but if it's JUST comedy... yes, it will get old, just like any joke, but if the music is good, too, there is no reason to think it shouldn't last.

although i love the d, digdug has a good point. i have this double-live cd that i swiped from epic. they were using it to pick songs for the album so it has all of their material. it was taken from the board at a roseland portland show during nxnw. if you have something like this, or have seen them play before, that's about all you need. the set-ups to the songs are the always exactly the same.
jb is not that funny without a script. the d magic is the unscripted feel of their script. dig?

the thing about they might be giants though was that they actually had talent. they understand how to make a well crafted pop song that happenes to also be funny... they were doing things in the mid 80s that no one was doing.... its true they are embarrassing now, but that didnt start until they stupidly started recording with a full band.

wow, it looks like this is goign to completely destroy, n chance for popularity I ever had, but I think that TMBG is embarrasing to me only because so many other people who are into the other music I'm into think they are the dumbest ever. as far as listening to their music, I'm not emabarased hta I think it's impressive work at times. as a band, they ahvae developed really interestingly, and people who love them just for two songs on Flood, they still show the love for those guys as well, but htey have developed tehir music beyond just humorous goffy stuff. All their music still has a touch of non-mainstream goofball humor to it, but they always just felt that they were telling stories with their music, they just happendd to be odd stories. I don't think they ever ever classified themselves as a humor band, and I never listened to them that way, really. I don't put them in a class with wierd al and the like, they are a rock band, and while I am currently rockign out to Against me!, a political sorta pukn band, and just one moment ago, totally got excited to see someone on the site's profile mention discount, another punk band, and have a huge wide of musical taste, I'm not ashamed to say TMBG is part of that taste. Also, the D is not solely a comedy team, they actually play pretty well-formed epic-rock, if you're into that stuff. It's too bad they get pushed into that genre, and they consider themselves a kick ass rock band, but know they come from a humor background. That whole thing is sort of their humor shtick, but they do play music.
-sorry for ranting or seeming defensive, just like to talk about music. I am completely open to debate, like it or not.

I still have records by The Dead Milkmen, TMBG and King Missle, but I NEVER listen to them anymore and I certainly did not buy those records for the bands' musical prowess. I thought "Jesus was way cool" was really funny at the time, and was a really observant jab at the people who blindly worship religious icons, but I probably haven't even thought about that record in 10 years until just now. Incidentally, that song probably has 3 chords and is no musical feat, to say the least.

If you listen to music only because it's catchy, then you're really missing out on something. That's OK if you are in a club to dance and just need something to getchu moving, but it's really not OK if you are a thinking being (especially if you are smart enough to get into Princeton). A band like Tenacious D is ALL about content, so it definitely matters. I have heard enough of TD to have an opinion about their music, which is why I'm posting here. I'm not really sure why anyone would post on this thread if one does not have an opinion concerning Jack & Kyle's music. It just seemed like a strange comment to make here.
